Oh yeah, John doesn't kill innocents, so he's not that ruthless. He's extremely ruthless towards enemies, but not innocents.

If they get in his way, theyre no longer innocents though. Theyre involved parties at that point.

give it a little more time as he was still in his teen but in more later chapters I gotta say he's quite ruthless towards his enemies and as for wanting the MC to be like Fang Yuan in the start, that would be impossible as you can see he's not reincarnated and doesn't have out worldly experience like fang yuan right away so the MC being soft to the innocents and weaklings is understandable as the author said so that the mc is was once a weakling himself due to being unable to cultivate despite being in the right age.
