I really tried giving it a chance but the MC is so pitiful. He has no backbone and is very timid. That would be bearable if he had intelligence but he doesnt have that.

This sounds like a yaoi with mc being bottom
The pity is that it will never happen that the test book is a yaoi as long as this site is a Chinese site. So the mc must be just pathetic anyway.

that was not the issue. I actually found that very realistic and even applauded when he chose his dreams instead of leaving with girl and having a normal life. What made me give up personally is how he just follows along. He has many tools to use to his own advantage but he just waits for opportunities and he seems to have weak character. in that regard he doesn't seem very ambitious. if there is a character development later I would not mind coming back. I am such a fan of showbiz novels and the fact this genre only has small number of novels that are translated is a such a shame.
