to me it feels like the story is very hollow. not enough info is being giving about basically everything. I feel the background is just glossed over and not explained in enough detail. also, we dont really know much about what a mage is at this point. it's an ok story just too much info left out.

You will only understand what the MC understands. So it's really required to keep on reading in order to understand more stuffs.

Well, that is rather preferable with the f*cked recent tendency of dumping tons and tons of info just to never being put in use, or the reader just dropping from some other problem.
