[Spoilers for anyone who hasn't completed Arc 1] I was planning to give a real long and detailed review for a few days now but now that Kanashiia-san has given such an awesome review, I don't think I will be able to follow up with much. Still, I want to mention a few things about this book that I don't think anyone has mentioned before. First let's get the obvious out of the way - story, characters, tone, world-building and writing quality a real 5/5 in my book. Updates have never dawdled so obviously a 5/5 too. I want to talk about what this story is about. At least, what I feel this story is about. Yes, the conflicting themes of hope and despair are obvious. But, aside from that, I feel there's another big aspect to the story. It's the question, what would it mean to be lost in a world without a god and a devil? As all us readers must be aware, the God and the Devil of the world are both fakes. Neither of them is really God or really Devil. But, never in the story have been told if there is an actual God or a Devil. In fact, when it was revealed that both are fakes, don't you guys feel like there's an increase in the ominous tone of the story, as if to say that these characters haven't just realized that they were fakes but that they have lost belief in real ones existing at all. Obviously, I don't know if there is or isn't a real God or a real Devil but I feel that there isn't. And so many of these characters, whether it's Sona driving herself forward on just one thing or Ethan feeling hollow despite so obviously not being hollow, it seems like they are lost, not truly understanding something they need to understand. I feel this is where Kais makes a big distinction with all of them. When, in the first 30 or so chapters, it felt like he was lost, others seemed like they were totally in know about everything. But, as the story unfolded, reality seems to be completely different. It seems as if, beneath the masks and facades, all except Kais are lost in one way or another. Even Walter Schmidt is searching for friendship to fill the void in his heart created by having lost a friend (I have a theory about who that friend could be but I'll keep that to myself for now). Anyway, that's something I have felt about the story. Thanks for reading.
