This novel has one of the best combinations of fantastical elements, acknowledgement of trauma, and steadily-blossoming romance. The character development is the main focus, and the magical powers and medieval fantasy aspects are carefully woven in to allow the romance to shine while driving the story forward with interesting conflicts.
