What can I say? The reader in me loves this, the history graduate in me adores this and the aspiring writer in me is nearly dead with jealousy. Absolutely love this story so far and can’t wait to read more. The attention to detail in reconstructing a bygone era is probably my absolute favourite thing about this, simply because I know how much work and research must go into every single paragraph. Truly a little gem! Also absolutely love the title haha but that would be for personal reasons. :)

The consistency and the fact that you haven’t tried to impose our modern outlook onto past cultures and events is a really big boon for me and you’ve done that through painstaking research which I know from experience takes effort... and a lot of it. It also takes a certain love, understanding and respect for the topic. There is a glaring difference between the work produced by one who puts in that effort and the work of one who does not. This novel is refreshing for me because you have put in the effort of researching the topic, so I am not pulled out of immersion every two seconds by ‘things’ (events, items, attitudes) or language which is out of place, therefore I don’t need to think too hard and can simply enjoy the story. I don’t need to be an expert on the topic to be able to see the effort which has been put in but I guess I appreciate it twice as much because I did study history and although my focus was more Ancient Greece and medieval Europe, I know enough about ancient china to appreciate that attention to detail. Make sense? I was ecstatically happy when you mentioned the name of the capital ‘Chang’An’ which was a major city in ancient China, also the beginning of both the eastern and western Silk Road and also ‘Liang’ I was able to follow the map in my head haha. The footnote that the two dialects were slightly different was also a nice touch which sticks out in my 24 hour sleep deprived mind. Artistic licence is obviously a thing but artistic license done within the realm of possibility in the real world makes for a much more enjoyable and plausible story to me. Obviously all of that is an opinion :) but yeah, the novel made me do an internal happy dance.
