I've read up to the current raw (volume 14, about 850 chapters), and Douluo Dalu 4 is just as great as the 1, 2 and 3. Xuanyu is a born leader. At the very beginning, I thought he'd be more innocent than the previous MCs of Douluo Dalu, but he's just as devious, if not more. It's the Douluo Dalu MC who commands the most respect out of everyone he meets the fastest, which makes sense considering his Dragon God bloodline and his future prospects. His destiny is great, but so will be his burden, as we've been spoiled that the enemies in DD4 will be on a whole other scale of powerful from previous DD series. An intergalactic scale. One important thing to mention : You'll realize once more chapters are up that Xuanyu takes a lot of time to level up his spirit power, compared to his friends. Although he lags behind, which may frustrate some people for the first few volumes, you'll realize that it actually doesn't matter. Each time he gets a new ring, it's a complete qualitative change of his power (the rise of his power is exponential), so he actually stays as powerful (if not more) than his friends even though they have a clear gap in spirit power. Although this caused some problems for him early in the story, but where I am at, people who know about him have stopped judging his power based on his spirit power level. And people who don't know about him and wonder why his Shrek classmates act as his minions / Shrek teachers treat him as precious jade are soon given a nice surprise. So fear not, all the frustrations you may get in the first few volumes will be compensated afterwards. I'm saying this for anyone who likes op Mcs, may have followed DD, and wonder why MC seems weak at the beginning compared to other MCs. Xuanyu is the most op MC possible in terms of future prospects, bloodline and flexibility of his abilities, as you'll slowly find out, and it's great that he doesn't progress too fast so his friends can still be at a similar level as him while growing up. Otherwise, he'd be the first lonely MC of the DD franchise.

LIKEI'd say you can definitely read this before / without the other series, considering each series takes place 10000 years after the last with a completely new set of characters. Just one thing : the main characters of the previous series became gods, and they have family ties. Also, the history of some important places (Shrek academy, Tang sect, the federation, the Spirit tower) are connected to previous series' events, so there are some minor spoilers along the way. So Xuanyu here is the son of DD3's MC and female Mc, Tang Wulin and Gu Yuena. Wulin (as Tang Le) and Yuena (as Nana) are actually present in this series, though they both lost their memories. Tang Wulin himself is the son of DD1's MC, Tang San, who along with the god realm of Douluo Dalu world were blown very far away by some kind of unexpected galactic current (it's difficult to explain unless you read DD2.5 and DD3.5 which are really short and tell what happens in god realm, but the theory is that some huge god realm blew up and sent a strong current into the galaxy and the aftermath of its explosion made many smaller god realms thrown far away). So the god realm is going back as quickly as they can to DD world, but before they come back, nobody from DD world can become a true god (eternal) and they're not as well protected (people can reach a level similar to the weakest of gods, but to become stronger they need a godhead). We've been told that the god realm will be back around the end of DD4. Although this will still be explained in DD4, for people who've read before, some elements are clearer once you know these things. If you need, you can go and ask some spoilers (on the history of DD and its link to the current one) in the DD4 spoiler page, or you can go into DD4 with nothing other than the minimal information I've given you. You'll still be able to enjoy DD4 without knowing more than that.
