Although I haven't seen the novel yet, the apocalypse is supposed to have started, you can't expect a normal person to transform into an Albert Wesker or Alice from Resident Evill. One will not kill people or Zombie so easily. You just have to try to imagine running a broomstick through someone's forehead, what the sensation of going through flesh and blood on your hands would feel. It is not something that one wanted to do, it would be something difficult to forget and it would be a bit traumatic
