Actually, there isn't enough details and considering Nick's personality, I'm more inclined to believe that that murder was more like a mistake. Like Nick did something to make the gang member have his attention distracted and Nick went for the assualt - only for the gang member to become a bloody pulp - Nick's strength enhancement was that monstrous.
