I’m really late but that’s just because the series is inconsistent about showing the black covering for armament. It’s NEVER visible, but sometimes they show it for visual effects. Let me give you an example of a scene that is literally shown two different ways. In Sabaody, when Rayleigh breaks Camie’s collar, he touches the collar with his bare hand, no blackening, then throws it to the side without any blackening. In Wano, when Luffy has a flashback to this scene while remembering Rayleigh’s advanced haki, Rayleigh’s hand is now blackened. The black is purely for visual effects, whenever the series feels like including it. Btw, Luffy doesn’t say “armament haki: blackening.” It’s “armament haki: hardening.” The most basic lvl of armament haki isn’t a solid layer, it’s just a coat of haki that can hit devil fruits and increase offensive and defensive power. The intermediate step is hardening, where it can serve as a genuine armor and the offensive and defensive power are much higher. The advanced stage is ryuo. None of the three stages are visible.

You say that as if they’ve had four interactions, they’ve communicated via text and email many times outside of their meetings, and they pretty obviously treat each other as friends. Not best friends or even close friends, but certainly friends.
