I'm no expert on alien physiology, but I imagine some evolutionary capability that is in the base 'collector' form, like the hairs. Frogs can breathe through their skin I believe, so it entirely possible for a convergent evolution to occur. Plus I imagine the collector as having plenty of basic evolutionary "templates", like the blades or something like bioluminescence. It only needs the biomass to develop it. Like it could develop bat wings if it wanted to, but it needs bat-like biomass to form the correct structures.
Now inside, the Collector felt that the air underground was even colder, almost frigid. Each of its warm blooded breaths left a trail of fog to mark it. It took its hand, now humanoid in shape, and extended an index finger.

Sentient is capable of feeling or emotion, sapient is capable of wisdom. I believe sapient is the word you are looking for.
Its appearance could now best be described as bestial, appearing like an armored, infinitely more monstrous kind of crocodile. It looked like something crocodiles would worship as a god.
