It needs to have some purpose that adds to the story. If it doesn't, throw it away or modify it so it does. Something constantly needs to be happening; progression is paramount—it doesn't have to be power progression—it can be emotional progression, world-building progression, - Think about other characters. I don't do this well, but ensure that the supporting cast has their own thing going in the background, and they don't seem like they are put on ice between their appearances. - Readers aren't stupid, so you don't need to be scared about them missing foreshadowings and clues. Trust them. Now, in fanfiction or web fictions, you might have to repeat things from time to time so they don't forget it—but don't overdo it. - Have your characters do the work. If you want to give them something, you must have them earn it. You don't have to make it super hard, but make sure it doesn't feel like a handout. Justify it with some level of reasoning that would make sense to everyone. - Interpersonal relationships between characters is important. Think about what they would think about each other. If they like, hate, dislike, love, irked, admire, envy... each other. - Only give the readers the information they need. Always ask yourself—"do the readers need to know this?" It will help you keep things lean. - DON'T be scared to change things. A majority of your readers have probably read the canon plot in fanfiction a thousand times—they want something different. It's possible to be entertaining by sticking to the canon, but it would be very difficult. - Ideas are cheap. If you have an idea, don't save it for later; use it now if possible. You will get more ideas later on. - Have your character make mistakes. Give them flaws. That's what that makes them interesting. The same goes for powers—their flaws and limitations make them interesting because they allow characters to be creative within those limitations. FLAWS > QUALITIES. - MOST IMPORTANT POINT— WRITE. The remaining 3 units of Spiritual Energy will sit there until he recovers 3 units of Physical Energy. Let's say the same shinobi goes into Senjutsu. However, I can perhaps impose that the chakra imbalance affects the quality of sage chakra as it does with normal chakra. Note: This won't affect Naruto's ability to master the sage mode, but it would influence the quality of his sage chakra.
