Chapter 2

"Sam, you know Dayton is dead. You saw the body and Brooke is gone, she's not stupid to come near you or me again without getting arrested." I know he's trying to help me see sense to the situation but I just need him to believe me, not talk to me like I'm crazy. "Alex. How do we know he was dead? Yes, we saw the blood and the body, but did anyone think to actually let us know that he in fact did die?" I question and I can see that my observation starts the gears in his head to turn. "Okay, point taken, but don't you think the police would have mentioned if he was still alive and out there? I mean he did try to kill me and you." He has good points as well, however I know what I saw.

"I don't know okay? All I know is that I was doing paperwork and I saw them out the window across the street." I tell him pointing the window. I watch as Alex gets out of the chair and makes his way to the window before pulling the blinds away to look. "Shorty, they're not there." He says turning back to me. Before I get the chance to say anything else, Alex comes to me and hugs me before continuing. "I think you're stressed out from the store and other things and you're mind is playing tricks on you."

Frustrated, I shove Alex off and start heading to the phone. "Why won't you believe me? I'm not crazy." I say as I start dialing. "Wait, who are you calling?" Alex asks making me roll my eyes. "I'm calling the police. Even if you're right they will tell us for sure at least." I respond before talking to the dispatcher.

After the brief conversation, I turn to Alex to see him looking annoyed. "What's wrong?" I ask as I stand in front of him. "Nothing, I just think you're overreacting and wasting their time." Even if I'm wrong and I am overreacting, he didn't need to sound so harsh about it. "Alex, I know I'm not crazy or overreacting. They were real and they were here. Even if they weren't for some reason, we can at least get the truth from the police themselves and see if Dayton really did die." After a few moments of silence, Alex nods his head agrees. I know he wants to hear the truth as well.

Soon after I hear a knock on the door. opening it, I see Shawn with a couple of policemen behind him. "Sorry to bother you Sam, but they're here to talk to you?" He says. I offer him a smile to calm his nerves. "Yes, why don't you guys come on in and Shawn, keep an eye out here please?" Everyone nods on the other side of the door as Shawn goes to work and I let the policemen in. "Ma'am, we got a call saying you saw Brooke Reynolds and Dayton Johnson? Is this correct?" One of the police officers asks me while the other one has their notepad out and ready for notes. "Yes officer, that is correct." I state confidently as Alex shakes his head behind them. "And what makes you believe it is them and not passer-byers?" he continues. "Look, I know it sounds crazy and hard to believe, but I know what I saw. They were staring into my window from across the street taunting me." I say with an exasperation to my voice. Why won't anyone believe me?

"Officers, can you please just tell my wife that she's stressed and overthinking. There can't possibly be anyway that it is them. Dayton is dead." Alex states while leaving the chair to come to my side. After a bit, I start to notice the looks between the two officers as if they know something we don't. "What is it?" I ask.

The officer I have been talking to sighs, before looking between me and Alex. "I don't know why no one has informed you about this, but, Dayton Johnson is alive. However his whereabouts are unknown."

I never thought I would be anymore shocked or stunned than I have at this moment. How is he alive? I saw the blood, the bullet hole. He seemed as dead as anyone else would have in that scenario. On top of it all, where has he been recovering? Not being able to stay standing, I slowly make my way to the chair and sit while Alex follows me. "What do you mean he's alive?" He asks the policemen while placing a hand on my shoulder for comfort. "I don't know what to tell you sir, all we know is that when our morgue team went to collect the body, it was gone." One of the officers add in a calming tone as to not freak us out.

Too late for that one buddy, I'm freaked the max out.

"For the time being, we want you guys to be more careful and we have decided to place a couple of officers outside your home for a couple of days in case they decide to try anything in the meantime." After that was said, I couldn't help but to drown out everything else. They were here. I wasn't making it up, wasn't seeing things.

I knew I wasn't crazy.

Why does this have to happen to us again? Haven't we been through enough the last time? Why are these two people even so hell bent on doing this to us? It all just seems to be petty revenge. What if they target Alex this time? Or worse, both of us.

I'm pulled from my thoughts as soon as Alex places a hand on my shoulder. "Are you okay Shorty?" He asks with a soft voice and eyes I can't help but fall in love with all over okay. "No I'm not, but just take me home." I say quietly as he nods before heading out the office with me.
