The Pilgrim's Process by John Bunyan

writing starts with sermons and ends with fiction. His famous allegory, the story of Christian, opens with a sentence of luminous simplicity that has the haunting compulsion of the hook in a great melody. "As I walk'd through the wilderness of this world, I lighted on a certain place, where was a Denn; And I laid me down in that place to sleep: And as I slept I dreamed a Dream." A "Denn" is a prison, and Bunyan wrote most of the book in Bedford county gaol, having been arrested for his beliefs during the "Great Persecution" of 1660-1690. He shares the experience of prison with Cervantes, who had the idea for Don Quixote while incarcerated in La Mancha. Like so many novels that follow in this list, The Pilgrim's Progress blends fact and fiction. As well as being the record of Bunyan's dream, a well-known fictional device, it is also an archetypal tale – a quest, fraught with danger. Christian's pilgrimage takes him through the Slough of Despond, Vanity Fair and the Delectable Mountains in a succession of adventures that keep the reader turning the page. With his good companions, Faithful and Hopeful, he vanquishes many enemies before arriving at the Celestial City with the line that still reverberates through the English literary tradition: "So he passed over, and all the trumpets sounded for him on the other side." In Hollywood terms, the novel has a perfect "arc". It also contains a cast of unforgettable characters, from Mr Worldly Wiseman to Lord Hategood, Mr Stand-fast and Mr Valiant-for-Truth. More profoundly, as an allegory of state repression, it has been described by the historian EP Thompson as one of the "foundation texts of the English working-class movement". Part of its uniquely English quality is a robust and engaging sense of humour that has cemented its appeal to generations of readers. The Pilgrim's Progress is the ultimate English classic, a book that has been continuously in print, from its first publication to the present day, in an extraordinary number of editions. There's no book in English, apart from the Bible, to equal Bunyan's masterpiece for the range of its readership, or its influence on writers as diverse as William Thackeray, Charlotte Bronte, Mark Twain, CS Lewis, John Steinbeck and even Enid Blyton. Huckleberry Finn speaks for many readers when, recalling his Mississippi education, he says: "There was some books too... One was 'Pilgrim's Progress', about a man that left his family it didn't say why. I read considerable in it now and then. The statements was interesting, but tough." The story of a man in search of the truth is the plot of many kinds of fiction, from Portnoy's Complaint to Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy. Like many of the writers in the list that follows, Bunyan had a wonderful ear for the rhythms of colloquial speech and his allegorical characters come to life in dialogue that never fails to advance the narrative. Story is one thing. The simple clarity and beauty of Bunyan's prose is something else. Braided together, style and content unite to make a timeless English classic. The Pilgrim's Progress, from this world, to that which is to come was first published in Holborn, London by Nathaniel Ponder, a non-conformist, at the beginning of 1678 in an edition of 191 pages. It was an immediate success. A second edition appeared before the end of 1678, with many new passages, a third in 1679, and several subsequent editions before Bunyan's death in August 1688. The Second Part of The Pilgrim's Progress was published in 1684, with a second edition in 1686. Eventually, the English text comprised some 108,260 words. It has never been out of print, and has been translated into more than 200 languages.

Loch skimmed his fingers lightly over Ginger’s back, and she shivered and bit her lip, her breath quickening. This way, he said. He led her over to a wooden frame that had metal rings fixed to it at strategic places, with ropes dangling from them, and he positioned her by two of the metal rings. Then, he tied each wrist to a rope and adjusted them until her arms were stretched over her head. She was facing the wall, with no idea of what he’d do next. The anticipation made her shiver. She wanted his hands on her so badly, wanted to feel his muscular body crushing her up against him... He grabbed the waistband of her skirt and pulled it down until it lay on the floor, puddled around her ankles. She was wearing pink lacy hipster underwear that exposed most of her generously sized rear end. He ran his fingers slowly over the skin of her right butt cheek, fingers lovingly tracing the ivory globe. Trails of pleasure sizzled in the path of his fingers, shooting through all the nerves in her body, down to her fingertips and toes. Her pussy throbbed with need. She bit back a moan and squirmed where she stood. You’re going to count out loud for each stroke,he told her. She glanced back and realized that he was holding a paddle in his hand, and she tensed in anticipation. If you don’t count, then the stroke doesn’t count. Got it? His voice cracked through the air, stern and authoritative. Yes, she whimpered.

Undeniable Commitments

This is the story of a man who knows only how to fulfil responsibilities. Rupert Mornington has been doing that for as long as he can remember. He has responsibilities towards a daughter who was never his, a mother who abandoned him, a brother who loves him and a brother who hates him. Among all these responsibilities will he ever get a time for love? Shimonthini Hazra did not become Monique because of desires but because of duties. She had to protect her family name from her infamous ambition. Ambition was never respected in the family she came from, not for a girl and not without a husband's name behind hers. But Monique created a name for herself. But when she really wanted a man's name behind hers she settled for what she could get only to be deprived by fate. Would she accept the man she was forced to marry by her sense of duty? Can there blossom love in the times of undeniable commitments? "My freedom has been offered on a leash and so is yours. A man has needs that I am not unaware of. To curb them one needs two things religious discipline or selfless love. Love me or leave me, Rupert. I deserve as much." Shimonthini begged. In her begging the Monique inside her recognized that Shimonthini had grown up from an infatuated teenager, gone through the stage of depressed adulthood and had finally reached the selfless love of maturity for in her request for the freedom she was liberating the man she had now grown to love. "You doubt my loyalty to you. I never doubt yours. Love is a misused word but if I had to consider only the emotions behind it I would say that I already love you." Rupert said running his fingers through her dark hair. His words were a caress in themselves, a gentle touch that made Shimonthini close her eyes till tears rolled down. "I know if circumstances were different I would never have been your first choice or the last. I don't want you to settle for me Rup and I won't settle for you."
