I stare at my empty plate,refusing to speak.He might just be trying to get on my good side,and as soon as I admit our friends were headed to Canada,he’ll telegraph one of his train station friends on down the line and they’ll find Hetty,Gabriel,and Mary before they have a chance to be free.
“Would that I had not checked that last car,”says Ezekiel.
Before I can stop myself I give the tiniest of nods,then close my eyes.I’ll ruin everything if I don’t get out of here.
“If someone other than me had found you two,things probably wouldn’t have gone so well,”says Ezekiel.“You can trust us here.”
“If you really wanted to help us,you wouldn’t have paraded Anna down the street so everybody could see her,”I say.“I’m surprised she didn’t run off then.”
I look up at Anna.Why didn’t she run?Not that there was anywhere for her to go.
