Zach's Turn

•••At Veronica's House•••

Veronica, found herself in the sprawling mansion that she called home. Her parents, high-powered business magnates, were off on one of their frequent trips, leaving Veronica to navigate the grandeur of the house alone. The evening sun cast a warm glow through the large windows of the living room as Veronica, having just finished a gourmet dinner prepared by the private chef, sank into the plush comfort of the sofa, her mind adrift in a sea of opulence and solitude.

The mansion exuded an aura of luxury and refinement, from the intricate chandeliers hanging overhead to the ornate furnishings that adorned every corner. Veronica, with her designer clothes and impeccable taste, was the epitome of elegance in this world of privilege and excess.

As she lounged in the serene setting, a sudden interruption shattered the tranquility of the mansion—a sharp ring of the doorbell echoed through the halls, signaling the arrival of an unexpected visitor. Curious and slightly wary, Veronica rose from the sofa, her silk gown whispering softly against the polished marble floor as she made her way to the entrance.

To her surprise, standing on the other side of the door was Zach, a familiar face and Austin's best friend but not someone she anticipated seeing at her doorstep. Veronica's eyes widened in astonishment, a mix of curiosity and concern flickering across her features as she welcomed him inside, leading him through the grand foyer to the extravagant living room.

Zach, with his easy smile and casual charm, followed Veronica into the lavishly appointed space, his eyes taking in the grandeur that surrounded them. As they settled into the plush seating, Veronica offered Zach a selection of gourmet snacks and beverages, her curiosity piqued by his unexpected visit.

"Zach, what a surprise! What brings you here tonight?" Veronica inquired, a mix of nervousness and curiosity evident in her voice as she wondered about his unexpected visit.

"Hey, Veronica! I was just in the neighborhood and thought I'd swing by. Thanks for having me," Zach replied, a chuckle escaping him as he realized the lameness of his excuse. Knowing that his home was quite a distance from Veronica's, and aside from her and Heti, he didn't know anyone in her neighborhood.

Zach continued, "I also want to apologize for our last phone call. I was a bit cold, and that wasn't my intention at all," Zach said, sounding embarrassed and apologetic.

Veronica gave Zach a slight smile and nod to acknowledge his apology. She then asked, "So, have you had anything to eat yet? Is there something specific you'd be in the mood for as a snack or drink?" Veronica inquired politely, showing hospitality to her unexpected guest.

"No, I'm good. You've basically set up a full spread here. This is more than enough, we're not at Blitz," Zach remarked playfully, aiming to lighten the atmosphere while also praising her for her hospitality.

Veronica chuckled at his comment and shared, "You know, every Tuesday and Thursday, the chef at Blitz basically becomes our family chef." She spoke with joy and a hint of pride, aware that the chef at Blitz is highly sought-after, and her family managed to win him over with their offerings.

Zach's eyes widened in surprise as he exclaimed, "No way! My family has been trying to convince him to come work for us. This is amazing! I can't wait to dig into this special treat you've laid out." Zach expressed his excitement as he picked up one of the gourmet sandwiches Veronica had served on the table and took a satisfying bite.

Zach then inquired, "Are your parents around? I hope it's okay that I came by unannounced. I just wanted to catch up with you and see how you've been doing." Zach's tone conveyed a mix of concern and curiosity.

"Ah, my parents are on a business trip. They're away quite often, so I'm used to being here on my own. And to answer your question, I'm actually doing better," Veronica responded with a smile. She felt touched by Zach's unexpected sweetness towards her. Despite his usual aloofness, there was something different about his demeanor now that she found intriguing.

"That's good to hear, Ron. Oh, um, is it okay if I call you Ron?" Zach asked, appearing somewhat shy.

"Of course, you can call me Ron," Veronica replied, unable to suppress a smile as she looked at Zach.

"Ron, there's something I want to ask you. I'm not sure if this is the best time, but would it be okay if we hang out like this more often?" Zach inquired, his tone curious and his gaze intense as he awaited Veronica's response.

Veronica seemed surprised by Zach's request, but at the same time, it was a welcomed distraction from the whole Austin drama.

"I'd be up for that, Zach," Veronica said with a smile.

As they chatted about various topics like school, club activities, and movies, the atmosphere felt easy and lighthearted. Eventually, it was time for Zach to head home as it was getting late. After saying his goodbyes, Zach surprised Veronica with a peck on the cheek. To her own surprise, Veronica found herself liking the gesture.

As Zach left Veronica's house, he couldn't shake off the memory of what had transpired at Jake's house.

•••Flashback when Zach went to Jake's House•••

"Jake, we need to snap Austin out of this nightmare. I'm certain he doesn't have romantic feelings for Janice. He's just being naive and foolish," Zach said, exasperated and desperate to rescue his friend Austin from his poor decision of being in a relationship with Janice.

Jake looked at Zach thoughtfully and said, "So, what's your plan here? Austin seems pretty determined about Janice. I get where you're coming from, but I'm clueless on how to assist him." Jake's tone carried a sense of helplessness and uncertainty.

"If Austin won't come to his senses, then I'll have to make him," Zach declared, his determination evident. He then added, "I'll approach Veronica." This statement caught Jake off guard, nearly causing him to fall from his chair.

"Zach, man, I really don't think that's a good idea," Jake cautioned, already anticipating the potential disaster.

Zach simply grinned devilishly at Jake and replied, "Don't stress, Jake. I'll make sure that idiot wakes up."

"Hmm...better make a move, Austin. Otherwise, I might actually start falling for Ron," Zach muttered to himself as he drove away from Veronica's house, feeling satisfied with his plan.
