A Fairy In the Field

Keya P.O.V

My aunt Shenita asks curiously. "Wait, what do you mean, you've seen them? How? Where?" Everyone was just as curious as she was. Silently waiting for my answer... How was I gonna answer her? What exactly do I even say? 'I really wish that you can shift into me,' Ja'el confesses quietly. Though that would be the best and worst way to prove it to them. Best because they'll know for a fact that Supernaturals do actually exist. And worst because they'll know about what's inside of me. But I just couldn't keep this to myself, now that I know. But I can't turn into Ja'el yet. So that option is off the table. Ja'el suggests quietly. 'Maybe Manuel can transform into Kane for them?' I think it over for a while. 'Hmm, maybe, but I don't think he is allowed over here. This area is just for females. I guess I can ask him, though. Kane said he wouldn't mind...' I was off in my own little world. I gasped, flinching when I heard Grammy yell, "Keya?!" Shit! Had she been talking to me or something? Crapola, she was glaring at me like she genuinely wanted to slap the taste outta my mouth.

She says irritated, "Did you not hear what I said, gurl?" Uh, I honestly didn't... "I didn't, Grammy. I must've spaced out, sorry." I apologize nervously. She frowns with pursed lips. "Well, bring ya ass back to Earth! I said, what kind of Supernatural shit are you talking about? When I was younger, I remember my great grandmother being able to heal people just as you can." What?! We were all shocked hearing this. "Really? Why have you never told me about this?" My aunts all agreed. Grammy clicks her tongue, annoyed, rolling her eyes. And that stubborn frown settles on her face. Her usual expression when she didn't want to do something. I knew that she hated talking about her terrible past. She didn't want to forget where she came from. Because she was proud of how far she made it in life. But she wasn't keen on talking about it either. But I need this information. I urge her, "Come on, Grammy, please tell me. It could be important." Give me the extra push I need to get this heavy shit off my chest. She sighs heavily, resting her elbow on the armrest of the recliner. There are 5 recliners in here. Grammy's in one. Myself, my pregnant aunt, Shenita, my aunt Tiny and my uncles, baby mama, Sonya. Grammy's right hand slowly yet deeply massaged her forehead. She always does this when she has a headache. "Okay." She quietly gives in. YES!

Grammy P.O.V

"Well, my family moved up here to Chicago when I was 7 years old. But I was born in the cotton fields of Mississippi. In this lil ol' place called Midnight, Mississippi." I remember it like it was yesterday. Blistering heat, sticky cotton threads, tiny seeds and a burden that was way too big for a toddler to bear. I lived through that and I am proud, but the memories are too much sometimes. All the hardships we went through. I look around and see that they are all listening closely. Good, this will be the last time I speak of this shit. "I had been picking cotton since I was 3. And we didn't get paid. The adults did, but not the children. Anyway, it's really light and sticky and it has thorns." I look down at my calloused fingers, remembering the feeling of those sharp thorns. "My lil fingers will be bleeding. And my great grand mammy, Big Momma. We used to call her..." I chuckle, recalling my Big Momma's cooking and teachings from my youth. "Well, she would heal me. She was also good at getting things to grow. Like, even if there was a drought on other plantations. She would still make crops grow for us and share with the community." I remember handing out turnips, collards, sweet potatoes, cabbage & more. "And if my memory serves me right... She was a lil ol' bitty lady. She was barely taller than me." Big Momma was barely pushing 4ft!

Keyas' eyes lit up at hearing this, literally! They brightened to a wild-looking gold color. And the enthusiastic grin on her face. Encouraged me to go on. "Fae Folk..." She whispers in some weird southern accent. The hell? "Whatchu say gurl?" She shakes her head as to clear it, frowning and blinking a few times. "She said uh, I mean, I said she could have been Fairy, Grammy." She announced louder. Hmm. "Fairy, huh? Well, I don't know about all that, but she was really short. And I remember that her feet barely touched the ground. It looked almost like she-" "Floated, right?" She asked seriously. Now, how the hell she knew I was gonna say that?! "Yeah... floated. How did you-" "Because I've seen one too, Grammy. Why you ain't never tell me this before?" Now I was agitated! "Because I was a child, then and I'm nearly 50 now! My memory ain't what it used to be. Hell, you give birth to 8 crazy ass kids that stress you out. And deal with a cheating husband! And see how great your fuckin memory still is at my age!"

Oh, shit! I pissed her off now. She may not want to talk anymore. Ja'el suggests, 'We need to calm her and get her back on track. She was doing so well,' Yuri adds, 'Yeah, she knows something. And we need to get it out of her.' Abijah says, 'Yes, but we won't be able to get anything if she is in an irritable state. Keya, you need to calm your nerves, I can help.' Abijah then lifts her hands while humming a pleasant tune. And I feel my worries drifting away. My body becoming light as a feather. I noticed everyone around me relaxing as well. Damn, my individuals were a-fuckin-mazing! And I have to let my family know this, but without freaking them out at the same time, sigh. Grammy calmed down enough and began telling us. How her great grandmother was always healing the wounds of the whipped slaves that lived on the plantation. And sharing her harvested bounty of home grown foods with the less fortunate. We were all so engrossed in her story that we were startled when one of the workers came to say we had 20 minutes left.

When the lady left. I took a deep breath and held it. Hearing Grammy's story gave me the courage I needed to tell mine finally. I release the breath. Looking around the room. "Ok, I have some crazy shit to tell y'all. I pray that y'all don't look at me differently after I divulge this info. And believe me, I was just as shocked when I learned about this." They all look at me in some type of way. But before I get another word out, my aunt YoYo shouts accusingly, "You're knocked up, ain't you?" Jeez, why does everyone think that I'm some slut?! "No! I'm still a VIRGIN!" This is crazy! Grammy warns, "Well, what the hell is it? And don't lie or I'm gonna kick your ass!" Goodness gracious, Grammy, smh...

"I know that supernaturals are real because I am one." Pure shock and a bit of disbelief all around. But I continued on. I told them about Manny's dream. (Pure terror!) How we talked to Rita. (They thought I was crazy, of course.) How we went to see the Millers and about the spells that Steve put on me and the real reason I gave away my kittens. And the ancient-looking device. (They really thought I was fuckin nuts!) "What, witches exist? Holy shit, Keya!" My aunt Tricey shouts. My family is very loud naturally. But they become extra loud when excited. "Yes, they are. Wizards are too. Actually, I believe all of those things we hear about. That people believe is mythical. I believe that they are real." My sister asks, "Why do you think they are real, Keya?" "Well, my test results said that on my maternal side I am 50% human, 45% fairy and 5% angel. And paternally, 100% werewolf." The room was silent for a few seconds. While everyone gave me the, 'What the fuck did this girl say?!' look. Then they all exploded in an array of emotions. (If they think I'm weird, just wait till they hear about Manny!) Because I couldn't talk over the racket they were making. I just calmly waited for them to quiet down.

When I can talk again, I say, "And if you think I'm weird. Wait until you hear everything Manny is." They all looked scar-cited. You know, scared and excited all at once? Yeah, it was crazy. My youngest aunt sneers, "So you just expect us to believe you?!" So I tell them about me meeting my Gurls. Ja'el suggests, 'Maybe we can show them a little of ourselves, Rukeya. What do you think?' I look around and see the conflict in my family's eyes. They are just like me. Seeing is believing. I honestly didn't believe in werewolves until I saw Kane shift. I tell My Gurls, 'I think we can show them a little something, sure.' I look at my family, smiling. "Would y'all like to meet My Supernaturals?" This should be fun.
