The Separation

The war of 1973 ruined many lives, or at least that is what my mother told me. Many people blamed the government, it was because of their choice that half of the world was separated. This separation was more than just long distance, it was way worse and far more devastating. Half of the world was sent to a different planet, we were sent to Mars.

And that leads us to today, May 3, 2027.

I am currently 15 years old, and my name is McKenzie. I've lived on Mars all my life, and I have to say it's not that bad. Although Mars is seen as the epitome of hell because of how hot it is, we were able to invent something that could keep us cold. The Dust invention collects the dust on Mars and turns it into cool air. This has been very helpful in keeping us alive but it sad to image how many decades it took for us to get here.

Don't get me wrong, Mars is great, but there are reasons why you don't see the people on Earth coming down to Mars. First, many people don't live past the age of 53, and nothing grows on Mars. This means that starvation is a common occurrence. The only way to get water is from the rain. Also, to prevent starvation, the government is in charge of providing us with food. But lately, it seems they have been reluctant to send food to us.

I was told by my mom to pick up food from the Market. We had finished last month's supply, and there was nothing left for today's dinner. As I walk down the street, I feel the dust passing through my sandals. Mars is like that, very dusty, with sand the same color as pumpkin spice and the sky having a faded out peach color. From being as torching as flame to semi-humid weather.

When I bent down to remove the dust, I saw two men coming out of the market. They seemed to be talking about politics. "You saw the food in there, he said. " I bet the government is trying to kill us off the first man spoke. "Yeah," said the second man. "No human can survive on that."

They seemed angry, and I get that. What the government is doing is unfair to us. Even though we're not living on the same planet, that doesn't mean we're less as important. If I was in charge…never mind. I need to stop dreaming, or at least that is what my mom says. Someone like me, who is just a commoner, could never be a government official. Anyways I hope there's still food left in the market.

I accidentally sign my novel up for a contest. I just want to let y'all know i didn't write it with the contest in mind
