The Bet
"Come play with me."
"Pass."
"Why not? You say you've improved since that last time we played. It'll be fun."
"Because I haven't gotten my first paycheck yet, and even if I did I still couldn't afford to play here. I'm satisfied watching."
"I'll cover you."
Observing him through squinted eyes, I wonder just exactly what he's up to. Nothing in life is free and if it is it's too good to be true.
"What do you want from me in return?"
"I want to make a bet with you. We play blackjack together. Whoever runs out of money first loses. If you win, you can keep the money I give you to play with no strings attached. But if I win, you have to spend the night with me and do whatever I want."
"No thanks."
Done with the conversation, I start to walk away.
