Chapter 51

“Liquid smoke,” Barry said, feeling out of sorts because his two lovers were upset and not talking.

Barry knew the ranch wasn’t doing well financially. Beef prices were static but the cost of feed and other things was going up. He wanted to help, knew he could help, but feared such an offer would upset Jimmy and Jake.

Well, they’re upset now anyway, he told himself.

“You given any more thought to letting us extend the barrel racing course?” Wayne asked Barry, obviously having run out of food questions. Wayne had been after Barry to practice more on Shadow, with an emphasis on barrel racing.

Usually the talk just flowed around Barry at meals; he was rarely the focus of it. And that was just fine by him. Being the prolonged focus of conversation was unsettling. “We could give it a try I guess. Still not sure about entering a local rodeo though.”

“You should,” Liam said. “Shadow is fast and you hardly ever fall off.”
