Chapter 19

“Stop!” Jacob shoved him hard. It nearly killed him to push Rory away. “Another time,” he said. “Another time…”

The bathroom door banged hard against the tile wall, and Jacob bolted out, to go ask his wife to marry him. He turned, for one last glance, in case he still had to remember Rory from that final moment. “Come back to me. The war’s gonna end…by 1975. The years go by fast. Take my word for that, Rory, if nothing else. Fight hard to stay alive. Fight hard for us.”

Once Jacob returned to June of 2020, the first thing he did was check the table. Rory’s obituary was gone. “Thank God.” He collapsed into the old, wooden chair in front of him and waited a minute—for what, he wasn’t sure. Maybe for Rory to come up from the basement or out of the bedroom, maybe for Wendy to still be alive, because what he had just done in the past, maybe, just maybe, it created a miracle.

None of that happened. He was still alone.
