Sinopse

Aight bois. This is coming from an author and a reader: most of y'all's writing sucks. Readers shouldn't have to turn their brains off to enjoy your writing... That's just forcing them to be a zombie and mindlessly passing time by, ain't no enjoyment there. So in case you couldn't tell already, this will be very blunt. Thus, here's some things to keep in mind as you read. 1. If you're just going to hear and not listen, skedaddle. Hearing is having it go through one ear and out the other, listening is paying attention and making the effort to understand. 2. Toss your pride away. Yeet it across the ocean. I've seen sooo many authors unable to take constructive criticism and INSIST on improper grammar because they couldn't admit they did something wrong. 3. If you think your writing is good, then it's terrible. Simple. Reason: If you think your writing is good, then you stop looking for ways to improve it and it stagnates. Even the best of the best authors (on wn and traditional books) have room for improvement so don't be like "ah it's good enough" or "there's no where else to improve." 4. Don't listen aggressively. I.e. listening only to find faults in what the person says and use it disprove their claim. One example is waiting for your opponent to make a grammar mistake.  This is different from debate tactics to lead your opponent into logical trap and use their fallacies they accidentally left behind to invalidate everything they said. It's hard to notice, but the main difference is that someone who listens aggressively is no longer open minded or calm. They're usually narrow minded and stubborn to admit they're wrong in those moments and are very easy to manipulate bc they're blinded so ye. Did I leave some traps within the logic presented here? Maybe. Don't be an idiot and you won't have to find out. Side note: apologies if this boi comes off as ranting, bc it is. The average wn quality is on par with mtl childrens books, which is infuriating bc now there's hardly anything good left to read.

Chapter 1The Prerequisites to Writing

Aight so first, get good at grammar. That's literally the only prereq yet the average wn grammar is on par with mtl... I wish it was an exaggeration...

If your grammar isn't near native english level, then you have no business to be writing. Simple. If you want to write, get better grammar. (applies to all languages)

AND FOR THE LOVE OF PAPER, stop relying on softwares like Grammarly. Just writing, yeeting into grammarly, then posting is one of the main reasons why the quality is absolute garbage. And not even gold garbage.

Aight, now for the actual reasons, evidence, and all of those shenanigans...

When a reader reads your book, they're looking at your story through lenses. Grammar affects how blurry those lenses are, with the best grammar having crystal clear lenses.

Who cares if you get a chapter out each day if your readers have to write half the story for you to fill the holes left by grammar?

Poor grammar absolutely demolishes any sense of writing style that may be there too (examples later, ref: A1). Softwares like grammarly are checked by bots so it does the same thing, but it's not as apparent to a non-native speaker or someone who doesn't look for it.

And yes, it affects the reader's experience even if they're completely clueless. (examples later, ref: A2)

If I put the examples in here then organization gets funky and chapter becomes long so ye (the examples would be better of explained in the writing style section). "ref" means "reference" and the two characters after are just tags for labeling/recognition purposes.

Next bit: Following the trends will do absolutely nothing if your writing quality is abysmal. As in, absolutely horrendous. Cancer inducing. So terrible people wouldn't read 50 chaps even if they were paid.

Alright jokes aside, following the trends will only get you clicks on the first few chapters. If your writing quality doesn't at least have amazing grammar, then the only people who will stay are those without brain cells, people who are just using your novel to kill time, or very, very, loyal readers.

Only exceptions to this are novels with unique storylines or aspects, but at that point you're no longer copy and pasting the trends so ye.

Title: Advice for WN authors (sinc) Rating: 5 stars Chapters read 11/11 as of 12/7/22 Outline: clear and straight to the point in chunks that can be read together or separately. Favorites chapter: 6 Grading scale and 7 advice part 1 As a self-thought author, I have little to no knowledge of writing practices, etc. I find the higher levels fascinating. And if improving can get me that far I will aim to do so. 10+ sounds awesome. Chapter 7 on the other hand, it shows you how to improve a passage through examples and clear explanations. Like an FAQ. This really was awesome to see on so many levels. 3 things I like. 1. Author just trying to help out. Needs special mention, there is no benefit to him even if he wastes time on this. so from my understanding, it is purely for altruistic reasons as even if it does help improve wn grammar he will not be credited. Thank you, Atlas. (Nickname I gave him due to a character) 2. Easy-to-understand examples. The sections show the same chunk of text and the improvements made. Give the reader a clear way to understand what is going on. Excellent stuff. 3. The big nuggets of wisdom given, each may sound stupid but as an author with a "was" problem such advice indeed helped my writing significantly, knowing your faults is the first step to improving them. When I tried reducing my use of was, I found my sentence structures vastly changing to accommodate its absence all of which contribute to my own style. I hope others get to experience the same light bulb moment as it was very rewarding for me. 3 things I didn't like 1. Author sounds like a condescending ashat. - self-explanatory. 2. Chapter 5 misconceptions about fantasy and reality part 4. - while I liked the microscope bit but this gradient line thing is bullocks. I didn't even read it in detail. The entire premise of trying to explain the line of a complex subject by a figurative image normally would work but this example fell short and made little sense to me. 3. Chapter 10 - you need context bish. Status messages need to be shown to illustrate how a mechanic works. Writing it once doesn't mean you would write thousands of it throughout your novel. Bish. Overall: While he may sound like a condescending bish there are a lot of nuggets of wisdom from Sinc. This book highlights most of them in a readable and structured way. As one who benefited from his wisdom, I can safely say the man knows what he is talking about. But you may have to ask questions as he tends to become a pretentious egotist when he is hungry. However, anyone who is truly trying to improve would benefit from reading this book. As you may have noticed, I have highlighted some of the author’s negative quirks but I also want to stress that he does not brag without ability. The dude has a robust enough ego that he lambasts his own work then has you read how he improves it. Most don't even have what it takes to read criticism. I am excited to see how many would actually read this thing as it takes guts to know you suck and want to improve. Overall, thank you to Atlas for writing this. I hope it helps those who are looking for guidance on improving their ability to create a narrative. For the reasons stated above, I rate this book a 5 so that it may help others in the future. And as a thank you to Atlas for trying to solve a problem Stay awesome Atlas.
