Chapter 62: Awakening the Eye

Mirai had long expected that he might awaken the Mangekyō Sharingan someday. As his mental strength attribute neared 500, his ocular power had also begun to stabilize. Yet, his eyes started to feel strange—at times numb, swollen, a constant reminder of the change approaching.

Today, after he defeated Raiga and absorbed a point of mental strength, his Sharingan finally evolved from the three-tomoe stage to the Mangekyō Sharingan.

[Name: Uchiha Mirai]

[Physique: 522]

[Mental Strength: 500]

[Chakra: 503]

[Kekkei Genkai: …]

[Ninjutsu: …Hidden Mist Jutsu!]

[Other: …]

Studying his attribute panel, a flicker of excitement crossed Mirai's face. Reaching 500 mental strength had unlocked the Mangekyō, but he couldn't help but wonder—how much more would he need to reach the Rinnegan?

"Mirai? Are you alright?"

Might Duy's voice brought him back to reality. He looked at the two, who were both watching him with concern, and spoke in a firm tone.

"Uncle Duy, Guy—what happened here today, especially about my eyes, must stay between us. Understood?"

Both Duy and Guy, realizing the gravity of the situation, nodded seriously.

"Don't worry, Mirai," Might Duy said, his hand over his heart. "Even if it costs us our lives, we'll never speak of it."

"Good." Mirai trusted Duy and Guy, otherwise, he wouldn't have risked his life to save them. Still, it was best to clarify a few things.

"When we return to the village, people will definitely ask what happened. Just say I rescued you two from the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. Uncle Duy, leave out the part about opening the Eighth Gate."

He wasn't trying to steal credit but simply wanted to avoid unnecessary complications. After all, a taijutsu-only special jōnin single-handedly killing four of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen would be hard for anyone to believe.

"You've got it, Mirai," Duy said, pounding his chest with a grin. "We're not exactly sharp, so we'll follow your lead."

Guy nodded in agreement. Not long ago, Mirai had passed overhead, and moments later, he returned carrying the heads of Fuguki, Jūzō, and Raiga. Even if the remaining Mist shinobi had survived, they would be no match for him.

"Mirai, you still haven't told us how you brought Father back," Gai asked, his curiosity clear. "Is it because of your special eyes?"

"Guy! Don't pry into sensitive matters," Duy chided, recognizing that ninja secrets, especially those that bordered on resurrection, were closely guarded for a reason.

"Ah, sorry! I didn't mean to overstep," Guy apologized, flustered. "Please forgive me, Mirai."

Mirai waved it off. "I did revive Uncle Duy with a new ability I gained recently. I can't go into too much detail, though—not because I don't trust you, but because sometimes knowing too much only invites danger."

Hearing this, Duy and Guy nodded, each suppressing their own curiosity.

Duy stepped forward, placing a firm hand on Mirai's shoulder.

"I can hardly believe it. The brilliant young boy who once trained alongside me has grown into a mighty tree towering above us all."

He was filled with emotion. Duy had nearly sacrificed himself by opening the Eighth Gate to kill four of the Swordsmen, yet Mirai had taken down three with ease and even brought him back from the brink of death. No wonder Guy's spirit had nearly crumbled from the shock.

Just as Mirai was about to say something, Duy turned to Guy with a loud shout.

"Guy, do you see it? This is youth! With hard work, you can achieve the impossible! The road to chasing Mirai may be endless, but don't you ever give up!"

Guy straightened, his face brimming with determination. "Yes, Father!"

"Guy!"

"Father!"

Watching them get more and more emotional, Mirai raised an eyebrow and took a few silent steps back. Sure enough, within moments, the two were locked in a tearful embrace.

Mirai's face twitched. This must be their… signature routine.

Finally, after they'd calmed down, Mirai spoke up. "Let's clean up the battlefield, then we'll head back and report."

"Understood!"

While Duy and Guy busied themselves, Mirai sealed the seven swords into a scroll. If he remembered correctly, Hozuki Mangetsu of the Mist could summon these swords back with a jutsu. While he had no use for them, if Kirigakure wanted them returned, they'd have to pay a hefty price.

With that done, Mirai finally had a moment to explore the abilities of his newly awakened Mangekyō Sharingan. Closing his eyes, information surfaced in his mind, clear as day.

His left eye's ability, "Takamagahara," allowed him to rewind the time of a specific object or an entire area, unaffected by his own timeline. It was how he'd revived Duy by rewinding his time to a point before the Eighth Gate was opened, thus restoring him to life.

His right eye's ability, "Sarutahiko-no-Mikoto," let him rewind his own time while leaving the outside world untouched.

So this is the power of the Sharingan—the reflection of one's heart. Even though I awakened the Mangekyō with an external boost, its abilities are deeply tied to my desires.

When he'd seen Duy's lifeless body, all he could think of was how, if he could turn back time, he'd do anything to save him. And so, his Mangekyō granted him not one, but two time-based abilities—one to rewind the world around him, the other to rewind himself. The more ocular power he expended, the further back he could go.

These abilities, Mirai thought, might even rival Kamui, the supposed strongest Mangekyō technique. What's more, he sensed a faint presence of yet another technique hidden within his Mangekyō. Though he couldn't access it yet, Mirai was confident that as his ocular power grew, that hidden power would one day be his to command.
