After one hour, Kato Dan walked into the training ground on the edge of the forest with a leisurely pace.
"How about it, can we start?"
Kato Dan squinted his eyes with a smile on his face.
"Teacher Kato, from the moment you walked into this training ground, the battle had already begun."
Uchiha Haruto also had a smile on his face as he casually took out a kunai and threw it into the woods around him.
The kunai made a whirring sound in mid-air, and the sharp blade cut through the rope, nailing it to the tree trunk without losing force.
The next moment, countless bamboos with sharpened tips flew out from the depths of the forest and flew towards Kato Dan.
"Oh? A trap? Nicely arranged."
Kato Dan's words were complimentary, but his body quickly moved around to avoid the bamboo thorns.
These traps were of little use to a jounin, especially someone of Kato Dan's caliber, an elite even among Konoha's jounin, without needing to use the spiritual transformation technique.
"Nami, let's go!"
Haruto yelled, then quickly threw a few shurikens, using steel wires to control Kato Dan's movement.
Furukawa, an Inuzuka clan member, screamed and charged forward with a kunai.
Born into the Inuzuka clan, he had good physical skills. Behind him was a large swarm of insects released by Aburame Ketasu.
Traps, shurikens, taijutsu, and insects. In a short period of time, Haruto and his team launched four waves of attacks.
From Kato Dan's perspective, the coordination of these attacks was already impressive for genin, especially considering that these three had only known each other for a day. "The village is optimistic about your future," Kato thought to himself, "believing you can grow into jounin. But this level of skill is not enough yet."
"That's it? Nothing more? Show me more surprises."
Kato smiled teasingly, deflecting the shuriken with his kunai and exchanging a few moves with Furukawa before knocking him away and scattering the swarm of insects in the air.
"This isn't over yet, Kato-sensei!"
Furukawa, though knocked back, let out a battle cry and dropped to all fours, a light blue chakra surrounding his limbs.
This was the basic ninjutsu of the Inuzuka clan, the Four-Legged Technique. Tetsumaru, his canine companion, was still too young and lacked combat capability, so Furukawa had to rely on techniques he could use on his own.
Fortunately, unlike his future counterpart Inuzuka Kiba, Furukawa was talented enough to have begun training in family ninjutsu before graduation. With the Four-Legged Technique, he was able to hold his ground against Kato for a couple more moves.
At the same time, Haruto activated his Sharingan, controlling the shuriken with steel wires, biting one cord in his mouth and manipulating others with his hands.
"Sharingan: Windmill of Three Great Swords!"
"Excellent shuriken skills," Kato Dan said with a hint of admiration. "As expected of an Uchiha."
When it comes to shuriken techniques, the Uchiha clan was the best in the ninja world.
"But, this still isn't enough."
Kato Dan, feeling that the team lacked the cohesion he was looking for, decided to increase the pressure. His speed increased significantly as he quickly kicked Furukawa away and rushed toward Haruto, wary of any more shuriken tricks.
Suddenly, another swarm of insects blocked his path.
As Kato dodged the insects, he noticed something odd. Groups of tiny flames, like falling embers, flew towards him.
"Fire Release: Phoenix Flower Jutsu!"
"Finally using ninjutsu, Haruto?" Kato Dan smiled as he quickly formed hand seals.
"Wind Release: Wind Blade Technique!"
While Wind Release usually counters Fire Release, the strength gap between the two shinobi was clear. Kato Dan's wind blades precisely cut through each flame.
But at that moment, another group of insects flew toward Kato Dan in strange patterns.
"Are you trying to obscure my vision for your next attack?"
Kato's interest was piqued as he nodded slightly.
"This isn't just to block your vision, Kato-sensei."
Through his Sharingan, Haruto could see that the insects were dragging extremely thin threads behind them, creating the odd flight patterns.
The purpose of these threads was...
"Fire Release: Dragon Fire Technique!"
The threads were made of fireproof steel wire coated with kerosene, forming lines of fire rushing toward Kato Dan. The ends of the steel wires were coated with a special fireproof material to protect the insects.
Even though the bugs wouldn't last long due to the high heat, if the tactic yielded results, the loss would be worthwhile.
"Genius tactical design," Kato Dan said, not bothering to evade the crisscrossing fire lines. He wasn't concerned; he didn't need to dodge.
The moment the flames touched him, Kato Dan dissipated into a puff of white smoke.
A shadow clone!
However, Furukawa and Aburame Ketasu, both skilled in reconnaissance, quickly located Kato Dan's real position.
As Furukawa called out, Haruto turned swiftly, drawing his sword to attack in sync with him.
Behind them, Aburame Ketasu's insects provided cover.
Yet, even though taijutsu wasn't his specialty, Kato Dan's abilities as a jounin far outmatched the genin. He easily deflected Haruto's sword strikes and kicked him back within moments.
This is where Aburame Ketasu's support became critical. His insects formed a temporary shield that blocked Kato Dan, giving Haruto enough time to complete six hand seals.
"Furukawa, move!"
Haruto shouted to his teammate before exhaling a huge fireball.
"Fire Release: Great Fireball Technique!"
The massive, blazing fireball barreled toward Kato Dan.
