After registering at the Spirit Hall and receiving their Soul Master badges, Lin Ye and Tang San left the building together. But instead of heading straight back to Notting Academy, Lin Ye had other plans. He wanted to visit a herbal shop to sell the materials he had collected from the Soul Beasts—such as the Sting-Horned Dragon Viper, Jade Aurora Bird, and the Mandala Snake—while in the Hunting Forest.
These materials, as Lin Ye knew from the books, were rare and expensive. Selling them should easily fetch several hundred, if not thousands, of gold soul coins.
Walking together for a bit, they eventually reached the fork in the road where the path split between Notting Academy and the commercial district. Lin Ye suddenly stopped.
"What's up, Lin Ye?" Tang San asked, looking at him with a puzzled expression.
"You go ahead back to the academy. I need to head to the commercial district for a bit," Lin Ye replied casually.
"The commercial district?" Tang San raised an eyebrow. After a brief pause, he said, "Actually, I need to head there too. I'm planning on looking for work at the blacksmith shop. It's near the commercial district anyway. Mind if I tag along?"
"Sure, let's go," Lin Ye agreed, nodding. The two changed direction and started walking towards the bustling heart of Notting City.
---
The commercial district of Notting City was its most vibrant area, located at the city center. The largest inns, clothing stores, and herbal shops were all situated here, making it the most prosperous part of town.
After walking for a while, they neared the district. Since the blacksmith shop was a little off the main area, Tang San and Lin Ye parted ways near the shop. Tang San went in, while Lin Ye continued down the street, eventually arriving at a large herbal shop.
The store was quite spacious, with its large hall divided into three main sections, each dedicated to different types of herbs. From left to right, they were arranged by rarity and value: Soul Beast ingredients, rare medicinal herbs, and common herbs.
Taking a quick glance around, Lin Ye noticed that most of the Soul Beast materials in the shop were fairly low-tier—only around ten-year-old specimens. There were very few that had reached the century mark, and those that did were primarily sourced from plants or non-aggressive herbivorous beasts, such as sprout-antler deer, jade-scaled lizards, or emerald cicadas.
"So even hundred-year-old Soul Beast materials are this rare..." Lin Ye mused to himself. "The stuff I collected should definitely fetch a good price."
After a quick scan of the shop's Soul Beast section, Lin Ye stepped back and looked up at the sign hanging above the entrance. The golden characters proudly displayed the shop's name: Thousand Treasures Herb Pavilion.
"Nice name. I just hope they live up to it." With a slight smile, Lin Ye stepped inside the shop.
The store was fairly busy, with many customers browsing or discussing purchases with the attendants. Since Lin Ye didn't have any particular herbs in mind, he decided to casually browse through the shelves.
The highest-grade Soul Beast materials, while impressive, weren't of much use to Lin Ye at the moment. Instead, he started looking through the section of more common herbs.
Despite being the largest herbal shop in Notting City, most of the herbs in the lowest-grade section were fairly ordinary. Ginseng, fleeceflower root, deer antlers, ganoderma, snow lotuses—these were all common medicinal herbs. There were some slightly rarer items, such as caterpillar fungus and red fruits, but nothing truly exceptional.
For most people, things like ginseng and snow lotus were highly sought-after remedies. But to Lin Ye, these were rather basic. His current training with the Dragon Elephant Prajna Technique still allowed him to improve just by eating regular food, so these herbs weren't particularly necessary for him.
"If they had hundred-year-old ginseng, that might be useful," Lin Ye thought as he walked through the aisles. "But with just ten-year ginsengs on sale here, I'd rather save my money and eat more meat instead. Even a low-grade ten-year ginseng costs one gold soul coin—enough to buy several days' worth of food."
What Lin Ye really wanted was something that could strengthen his bones and tendons. While his muscles and skin were steadily improving from the technique, the bones and tendons were much harder to train. Strengthening his skeletal structure would greatly accelerate his progress with the Dragon Elephant Prajna Technique.
However, finding such herbs wasn't easy. After browsing for a while, Lin Ye still hadn't spotted anything that matched what he was looking for.
While Lin Ye continued his search, a well-dressed young man and his entourage strolled out of a nearby restaurant and leisurely made their way towards the herb shop.
---
"Wait, what's this…?"
After searching for some time, Lin Ye's eyes lit up as he found a particular fruit in the rare herb section. It was about the size of a fist, with a light yellow hue and a faint golden sheen on its skin.
"A Vajra Bodhi Fruit!"
This rare fruit grew on a plant called the Vajra Bodhi Vine, which only bore one fruit at a time. The fruit would continue to grow indefinitely if left on the vine. Judging by the size of this one, it had likely grown for about a hundred years.
The Vajra Bodhi Fruit was known for its ability to strengthen bones. A hundred-year-old Vajra Bodhi Fruit was exactly what Lin Ye needed for his training!
"Excuse me!" Lin Ye called out, unable to hide his excitement as he gazed at the fruit.
"Yes, coming!" A shopkeeper in elegant robes quickly emerged from the back of the shop. Hearing Lin Ye's call, he smiled and made his way over.
However, when the shopkeeper reached the front and saw that it was just a young boy, his friendly demeanor immediately soured.
A mere child?
He glanced at Lin Ye, noting his simple, coarse clothing. The total value of the boy's outfit probably didn't even amount to a single silver soul coin.
The shopkeeper's face fell further. He had thought there might be a big sale on the horizon, but now he felt like he'd been played for a fool.
"How much for this Vajra Bodhi Fruit?" Lin Ye asked, not noticing the shopkeeper's change in mood.
"This fruit?" The shopkeeper forced a smile, his voice dripping with condescension. "Are you asking for someone else, little boy?"
Lin Ye frowned slightly at the tone. "No, it's for me. I want to buy it."
"You want to buy it?" The shopkeeper let out a mocking laugh. "Kid, do you think I'm stupid? Just look at you! Dressed like that, and you dare ask about something like this Vajra Bodhi Fruit?"
"Do you even know how much it costs? It's worth sixty-six gold soul coins! You couldn't afford it even if I sold you off!"
Lin Ye's expression darkened. "And what makes you think I can't afford it? Just because I'm young?"
"Of course!" The shopkeeper snorted, crossing his arms. "With your shabby appearance, you couldn't even afford a ten-year-old ginseng, let alone a sixty-six gold soul coin fruit. Quit wasting my time, and get lost!"
Lin Ye narrowed his eyes. "What if I can afford it?"
Before the shopkeeper could respond, a sneering voice came from behind.
"If you can afford it, I'll pay for it myself!"
