The opposite end of the bridge did not particularly seem to be getting any closer but he simply assumed that he was still to far to tell.

It was like climbing up a very tall snowy mountain. After climbing up a certain distance you would no longer be able to easily determine how far up you have climbed.

You could just be like 'Yeah, I have climbed quite far. Best keep going.'

Looking up at your destination, a similar scenario may play out – as the distance you climb in half an hour may not make the summit look much closer than it did initially.

This was the logic that he deemed was feasible in this scenario.
