CHAPTER FOURTEEN

When I woke up, it was in a metal cage, but it wasn't locked. Just a normal latch on the outside. Instantly, I reached a paw through the cage to claw at the latch. A claw wriggled under the gap in the latch, and… Ta-da! Even though I didnt have fingers, the cage swung open. You should have tried harder, scientists. That isn't enough to stop this human-turned-cat!

"Beeflight? Are you alright?" Asked a voice. I turned around to see Shadow in the cage next to me. "Yep, im fine," I said dismissively, walking up to the cage to look through the bars, my nose mere inches from Shadow's. "Are you sure? they didn't do anything?" Shadow asked, cautiously leaning forward, nose twitching. "Ah, don't be so worried, it was just a little sedative. Anyway, let's get out of here, quickly. I'm quite tired of this place. Who knew being a hero was so hard?" I joked, easily opening Shadow's cage. Shadow stepped out, looking at the door.

"How are we going to get out?" Shadow asked me, and I winked. "Just you wait. Everything will be easy after this since I have the code."

Not so easy, it turned out, since I couldn't reach the door latch. Shadow watched, amused. "Do you need help?" Yes, please-" I mewed, a bit embarrassed. Short cat paws???? I yelped as I was catapulted into the air by Shadow. My paws barely managed to graze the latch, but I held on for dear life. One claw reached out to snag the numbers. 1, 2, 3, 4. With a beep, the door swung open, with me screeching in surprise as the door swung back and forth since I was still on the handle. As I fell, Shadow caught me. Phew. I was worried I'd break my head there.

"Let's go! It's night, so they probably all went home." I dashed down the door and now sprung onto the slightly lower latch, which was, luckily, within my arm's reach. Another time, 1, 2, 3, 4. The door swung open, and I tried to keep my balance as I was swung through the air. This time, I made sure to pay attention to the direction the ground was moving in and managed to land a semi-graceful fall that ended in me sprawled across the floor. The cats were now all staring at me.

"Shadow? You saw me open the locks, right? do you think you can do it?" I whispered, and Shadow nodded. "I'll figure it out." Easy peasy, then. I opened the cages, and a few cats stepped out, hesitantly at first. Then they started to help other cats get out too. Soon, there was a herd of cats gathered in the dimly lit room, the cages all opened, me and Shadow in the middle. "Alright, everyone out through the windows, but make sure to be quiet," I said, hopping up 3 cages and onto the windowsill. I guess these guys loved latches because this window had a latch too. I opened it easily and then hopped through.

"You're free now. Happy?"
