Under everyone's watchful eyes, Long Tian confidently ascended the stage. Everyone was surprised to see the handsome look of the boy. In contrast, Lin Feng's eyes held a sinister edge, a sign of his malicious intentions. His hands were itching to kill the boy right there and then, but he calmed himself.
Beside him, the maid observed his overly enthusiastic face and looked at the boy before her face turned weird. *Does this bastard have that kind of hobby?*
The heirs from the top clans were well aware of Long Tian's identity. This was also why they were waiting for his turn. Even the elders' eyes flashed a knowing glint.
Under everyone's curious eyes, Long Tian placed his hands on the "fate-revealing orb." The energy inside the orb activated, drawing forth his inner qi, which seemed to respond to the mysterious energy emanating from the orb. The aura around him started pulsating, and he felt a weird experience, but he calmed himself and focused his eyes, waiting for the results.
Simultaneously, the orbs started to emit a soft, ethereal glow, making the clan heads hold their breath in tension. The gathering of onlookers watched in anticipation, their breaths held, as if expecting another talent like Ruo'er. Their thoughts were along the lines. *"Maybe good-looking people have more talent."*
All eyes were fixed on Long Tian, waiting to see the outcome of this intriguing interaction between man and magic.
As the glow increased, fear gripped the hearts of the people who wanted the boy to be talentless. They sucked in cold breath seeing the glow, but soon the color of the orb changed, and it settled down on the white, making them heave a sigh of relief. The crowd sighed, thinking it was a false call.
People who were jealous of his looks were laughing at him, and those who were swooning after him were now just ignoring him.
"Another trash!"
"I told you talent had nothing to do with looks!"
"You are just jealous of his looks."
"He can only be a mortal for the rest of his life."
This is the nature of the world; as long as you have talent, looks do not matter, and it goes both ways. If you have good looks but trash talent, it would mean nothing. Even the girl who found him attractive looked away from him.
A look of concern appeared on Long Chen's face as he thought. His mind raced for different possibilities. *"Without any talent, how can he get a seat within the sect?"* He exchanged glances with the Xiao family head sitting beside him, who looked at him with a similar expression.
Long Tian sighed in resignation. Taking a deep breath, he gained a newfound determination. *"If I can't cultivate my qi, I will cultivate my body. There is the thing that Mother mentioned too. I wonder how she has a technique many would kill for."* Body cultivation was another path of cultivation, just like Qi cultivation.
He knew his mother was hiding many things from him, but he was in no position to complain as he was the same; he too held secrets of his own. He feared that these secrets would change their relationship if they were to be known by her.
Ruo'er was a little sad thinking that she wouldn't be able to go to the sect along with him. She bit her lips and looked at him with a reluctant expression. Her heart ached at the sight of the helpless boy who was carrying so much burden on his shoulder but never showed it to others.
Soon she made up her mind as her eyes were firm and filled with determination. *"I will become so strong that I will carry his burdens for him."*
Disappointed, Long Tian turned to walk back to the audience. He was not a person to give up and was determined to find another way to make up for his trash talent.
While walking down, a sudden voice stopped him, and he turned to look at the elder who stopped him in his tracks.
"Wait, little guy, why don't you try again?" The elder spoke in a warm tone while stroking his beard. His words stirred dissatisfaction among the crowd.
"Why would you do something that you haven't done for anyone?" His eyes displayed his inner curiosity and doubt. Even the people in the audience started shouting.
"I also want to go again then! I was talentless just like him, so why is he getting special treatment?"
"That's right. What right does he have to go again?"
One of the members of the audience spoke, while many others followed his lead.
The elders released their pressure, making their faces slam on the ground. Elder Tang turned to look at Long Tian, and his eyes softened.
"You were one of the people who could withstand my pressure without difficulty. Even if you don't have any talent, you can join our sect as a helper. You can get more salary there than any job in this city."
This revelation shocked everyone, and they understood why the elder was being generous. Now they were even more jealous of his luck. They decided to hold their thoughts back and find the boy later to teach him a lesson.
"Not only does he have good looks, but the elder is also favoring him." These types of talk spread like wildfire among the people.
Long Tian did not believe the elder a single bit; he could see the cunning look hidden in the elder's eyes from miles away.
The elders were only looking composed on the outside, but they were panicking about how to bring the boy into the sect. For their plans, they needed the boy. Now the sect leader might become unhappy hearing that he has to change his plans.
Lin Feng was having his own difficulties; he was looking for an opportunity to kill the boy, but now how can he make his plan come to fruition? Hearing the elder's response, he praised the elder's wit in his mind.
"I can use this elder to secure my position as the sect master." He started dreaming of the days he would sit in his father's seat and everyone would be bowing to him.
If the elder came to know of his plans, he might kick him in the ass while shouting at him, *"I would rather have a less talented sect leader than have a dumb shit like you."*
Long Tian grew more suspicious of their schemes. Everything that has happened till now indicated something was going to happen in the sect in the future. Something big and something dangerous, and he was a part of their plans.
The elders' eagerness to make him enter the sect, Lin Feng's words, and most importantly his grandfather's involvement. Every single thing seemed to be raising a red flag for him. His intuition told him that he would be walking into a trap if he accepted the offer.
Long Tian realized that he needed to be even more vigilant when dealing with the matters of the sect.
Long Tian turned to the elder and slightly bowed as a show of respect.
"I thank you for the offer, but I
would have to reject it. It would be unfair to all those who have already been tested and those who are going to be tested. As for the job, I never had the intention to join the sect because I have my mother, who I need to take care of. I just wanted to test my talent, and since I don't have any, I can focus all of my attention on her."
Long Tian spoke after carefully thinking of a response. He used the appeal of the audience to make it look like he was against injustice. By using his responsibility towards his mother, he was showing that he was a filial child.
This response not only protected him from any forceful recruitment, but it also allowed him to maintain his reputation. And it did work; people were astonished by his response. Those who were jealous of him now respected him a little for his filial piety.
Most of the commoners in the arena understood the weight of family responsibilities and the sacrifices that came with them. Their dissatisfaction decreased a little as they thought the boy had some self-awareness.
Elders cursed in their minds as they found themselves in a tough spot. Before they could think of a response, someone lost his cool.
Lin Feng, whose penitence had long gone, spoke out loud, causing the elders to curse at his nine generations.
"How dare you!! Who do you think you are? The elders are generous enough to give you a chance, and you just ignore their words like they were nothing. I will not let you get away with insulting our sect like this. Fight me; if you win, you can walk away safely."
Now the elders were about to slap this shithead to death before someone else could. They felt like coughing up blood as a vein popped on their forehead.
They really wished to kill him and be done with it. This guy himself crushed all their schemes of convincing Long Tian to join them.
If not for the fact that he was the son of their sect leader, every elder would have either thrown him out of the sect or smashed him to the ground until no pieces of his body were left.
Long Tian looked at the elders with pity for a split second as he understood how difficult it must have been for them when dealing with this guy.
But since they were his enemy, it went away as soon as it came. He looked at Lin Feng as if he was an idiot and spoke under his breath. *"The sect might get destroyed under him."*
The elders, due to their cultivation, heard his murmur, but they did not say anything as if they agreed with his words. They were just too tired of him.
