--- 3rd Person POV ---
The drums of war reverberate throughout the entire empire in the wake of Prime Minister Aguinaldo's declaration, announced just outside the Imperial City. Tabloids swiftly disseminated their coverage of the event, prominently featuring the prime minister's declaration speech.
The news rapidly proliferated across the entire empire, sparking celebrations among the populace as their nation took a stand against the Japanese Empire's aggression. Simultaneously, others voiced apprehension about the potential consequences of this conflict. Among the families of Butuanon soldiers, reactions to the news varied; some expressed pride and happiness at the prospect of serving the empire, while others harbored concerns for the safety and well-being of their loved ones on the battlefield.
These developments surprised foreign ambassadors in the Empire, the majority of whom had anticipated witnessing a confrontation between the Chinese and Butuanon forces, assuming that the conflict with Japan would occur at a later date. However, their assumptions proved incorrect. Not only did the clash between Butuan and Japan take precedence, but also diplomatic relations with the Qing dynasty were once again progressing positively. This was evident in the Xuwen County's decision to open its borders to the Butuanons residing on the island of Hainan.
At the Baltso Palace, King Gojong and his entire family received news from a servant he had dispatched beyond the Imperial City to witness a significant event. Upon receiving the news, King Gojong was filled with joy. After months in exile, he and his family could finally return home. His confidence in the empire's military was at its peak, bolstered by his observations during his stay in the nation.
Not only did he witness the daily actions and training of the military, but he and Prince Uihwa also observed the rigorous selection and training process that forged the soldiers of Butuan into formidable warriors. King Gojong's time in Butuan greatly broadened his understanding of what needed to be done upon his return as the King of Joseon.
Despite the joy in the Baltso Palace, one person harbored secret concerns and sought ways to relay the information she received to King Sunjong of Joseon. Royal Consort Jang of the Deoksu Jang Clan, despite warnings from her own son, Prince Uihwa, and daughter, Princess Uisuk, chose to ignore them. Instead, she continued to secretly provide information to King Sunjong.
For unknown reasons, her trusted servants, responsible for sending information back to Joseon, never returned after their last transmission two months ago. While Royal Consort Jang speculated that her servant might have run away, her worry persisted. She attempted to send other servants secretly, or contemplated going out herself to search for them, but all efforts proved futile.
Unbeknownst to Royal Consort Jang, her son, Prince Uihwa, intercepted the servant from sending the letter two months ago. Afraid of his king father discovering his mother's crime, Prince Uihwa sent the servant away from the capital, dispatching her to the Island of Tablas in Visayas with a modest sum of money. For Prince Uihwa, his mother's crimes had already gone too far. Adding more to it wouldn't just endanger his mother but would surely entangle him and his sister in her mess. This is why Prince Uihwa decided to intervene and slowly make his mother stop without even reporting her to his king father.
Prince Uihwa then returned to Baltso Palace as if nothing had happened after sending off his mother's servant.
Unaware of this, Royal Consort Jang once again devised a plan to send the information back to King Sunjong. Desperate and fearful of her son's status as the heir to King Sunjong being jeopardized, Royal Consort Jang made her move.
In the seas east of Butuan, a few hours after the announcement of Prime Minister Aguinaldo, a total of 46 ships left the Eastern Butuan Sea and the coast of Butuan, heading to the Islands under the control of the Japanese Empire. The ships were now loaded not only with naval soldiers from Butuan but also with its army, armed with both old and new weapons.
While this was happening, the Japanese Empire and its military were still oblivious to the incoming battle that the Butuanon Imperial Military was bringing. It wasn't until the first batch of the invading forces of the Butuanon Imperial Military from Hainan Islands — a total of 15 ships, 1 battleship, 3 protected cruisers, 2 destroyers, and 9 support ships — made its departure in the afternoon of the 1st of April at 2 pm.
The fleet, led by Vice Admiral Chen Yi, has departed from the ports of Haikou and is making its way toward the island of Taiwan—a dream long cherished by the people of Butuan. Vice Admiral Chen Yi is accompanied by several ship captains and military personnel. His flagship is a Majestic-class battleship from Britain. The fleet, consisting of his flagship and nine other ships, is sailing at a speed of 10 to 20 knots and is expected to reach Taiwan by 1 a.m. the next day.
The land forces accompanying the naval expedition, numbering approximately a thousand individuals, are under the command of Major General Antonio Luna. His army comprises three brigades totaling 30 thousand individuals. Assisting him are Brigadier General Yong Li of Liangao County, Brigadier General Guolao Jiānwén of Haikou County, and Brigadier General Mingde Zhu of Chengmai County. Each general is overseeing one brigade, and Major General Luna anticipates leading them from behind the scenes.
(a/n: I have change something with their position in the military. I realize that their previous position is way higher compared to Antonio Luna himself, making it impossible for Luna to lead the brigades. Thus, instead of having them as General, I made them to be a Brigadier General, one rank lower to Luna.
I also decided to follow the naming format of mainland Butuan; name-middle name-surname. ex: from Jiānwén Guolao to Guolao Jiānwén.)
Nervousness was etched on the faces of the soldiers heading to the island. This is understandable, as the majority of them were soldiers who had never before faced battle or witnessed a comrade fall on the battlefield. Major General (MG) Luna observed his soldiers with sternness and strictness, not wanting to see anyone with low morale, understanding the potential impact on the majority.
Wearing his military uniform and a jacket, MG Luna watched as his soldiers went about their respective setups. Some prepared to sleep, others chatted with fellow soldiers, and some were seen praying and playing. Behind him, Vice Admiral (VA) Chen Yi approached, clad in his own version of the military uniform.
"The nights are quite chilly these days, aren't they?" VA Yi remarked, initiating a conversation with his colleague. This caught the attention of MG Luna, who shifted his focus towards VA Yi, now facing the dark sea.
"Indeed. Despite it being the summer month, the sea retains its coldness. A hostile area indeed," MG Luna commented with a smile.
"Aye. The sea itself is full of unpredictable things. It almost seems like summer is nonexistent in these waters," VA Yi replied, leaning towards the ship's railing to gaze at the waters ahead.
"I heard about what you did during the standoff with the Qing Imperial Navy, Vice Admiral. It was commendable of you not to waver in the face of such a formidable enemy," MG Luna added, expressing admiration and recalling the discussions he had heard about the confrontation with the Qing Imperial Navy.
Assigned to the same area as Vice Admiral Chen Yi, Major General Luna rarely finds the time to engage in discussions with the Vice Admiral. Luna dedicates his free moments to rest and his family, a sentiment shared by Vice Admiral Chen Yi. For him, nothing surpasses the fulfillment derived from faithfully executing his duties. Vice Admiral Chen Yi is renowned as one of the most industrious Vice Admirals in Butuan. His leisure time is also devoted to rest and family, leaving no room for mundane pursuits.
Despite their close proximity, the likelihood of their encounters is minimal. Even when they do meet, conversations inevitably gravitate towards work, leaving little space for personal topics. Hence, Major General Luna seizes this opportunity to broach the subject.
"Hmm? You still remember that? Hahaha! It's simply our duty, Major General. Both of us have served the empire for years, dedicating the majority of our time to safeguarding our motherland and family. I believe you understand that," Vice Admiral Yi responded with laughter, lightly tapping Major General Luna's shoulder. Luna smiled and nodded in agreement with Vice Admiral Yi's words.
Their years of dedicated service to the empire have left them with little to no time for their families and personal lives. Since taking office, they have devoted themselves entirely to the empire and the imperial family, committed to upholding its honor and ensuring its safety.
Upon hearing about Captain Devdutt and his fleet, both of them erupted in anger and resentment. The idea of retaliating against the Japanese immediately crossed their minds, but fortunately, their subordinates intervened. During those days, they had to suppress their anger and hatred towards the Japanese soldiers.
This is why, upon learning that the empire would declare war against the Japanese, they were elated and eager to seek revenge. Their joy escalated when Prime Minister Aguinaldo contacted them via telegraph, issuing the command to take control of the Island of Taiwan from the Japanese tonight—an order they willingly accepted. This situation is a win-win for them, as Taiwan is not only a crucial part of their history but also a strategically important island that, once secured, will further expand the influence of their nation.
"Hahaha, spare me with those fucking formalities, Chen Yi. We both know that our hectic schedules make it nearly impossible for us to have a chat like this," MG Luna replied, playfully pushing the laughing Vice Admiral.
"Hahaha! Indeed. Not to mention, in a few hours, we'll be landing on Taiwan itself, our ancestral origin," VA Chen Yi replied. He took a deep breath before changing the topic, "But anyways, I heard you had the chance to meet and even get close to the Imperial Crown Prince himself. You lucky bastard," Chen Yi continued, with an envious look on his face.
"It's true, a few times, to say the least. Especially in the past months, I've been with HIH, Imperial Prince Sharvil, allowing me to enter and exit the complex with him effortlessly. I've also had a few exchanges of words with him. Quite a brilliant child, to say the least," MG Luna stated, redirecting his attention back to the waters.
"Lucky you… How was it, then? Was it pleasant?" VA Chen Yi inquired eagerly.
Vice Admiral Chen Yi had always wanted to meet the famous Imperial Crown Prince Siagu Alexie himself. The child who had been the talk of the military for months due to his contributions to the advancement of the military. It was unbelievable, to say the least, for Vice Admiral Chen Yi to believe the contributions Imperial Crown Prince (ICP) Siagu had made.
Not only Vice Admiral Chen Yi holds reservations about ICP Siagu; many high-ranking military officials share a degree of skepticism regarding the actions of the Imperial Crown Prince. The Imperial Crown Prince's age alone significantly contributes to these reservations.
However, the outstanding performance of a few sample guns, not to mention the rigorous training regimens, has left Vice Admiral Chen Yi and others with no choice but to acknowledge reality. What's noteworthy is the exceptional performance of a growing number of soldiers, leading to a narrative that the Imperial Crown Prince is divinely blessed, possessing a wisdom beyond his years.
Strangely, this narrative has permeated the masses, garnering an increasing number of believers. This phenomenon has notably elevated the popularity of the monarchy, especially among the poor, uneducated, and superstitious individuals. It reinforces the notion that the monarchy is a divine institution, blessed by God.
"Well, the Imperial Crown Prince is both amusing and remarkably mature in conversation, to say the least. Despite being only 10 years old, he defies the expectations of a typical child of his age. Many, including the residents of the Imperial Complex and the Imperial City, perceive the Imperial Crown Prince in a positive light, as someone trustworthy," remarked MG Luna, gazing at the sea as he reflected on his recent interactions with the Imperial Crown Prince and those around him.
"I see. It appears that the rumors surrounding him are indeed true," VA Yi replied with a smile towards MG Luna, feeling satisfied with Luna's response.
"But that's not the whole story," MG Luna interjected, leaving VA Yi confused and curious once again.
"Not the whole story? What do you mean?" VA Yi inquired, curiosity evident in his tone. Luna turned his attention towards VA Yi.
"His Imperial Highness, Imperial Crown Prince Siagu Alexie, is not someone you want to face. Remember what happened to his younger brother, the current youngest son of His Imperial Majesties, Imperial Prince Ainesh?" MG Luna asked VA Yi, who simply nodded. "Reports outside the palace suggested that it was the head eunuch Isagani and head court lady Putri Chaya who discovered what happened to the little prince. The public even bought this narrative as it was convincingly relayed by the Lobestar Tribune. However, in reality, it was the Imperial Crown Prince himself who found and uncovered everything after having his senior eunuch and senior court lady investigate," Luna revealed, shocking and disbelieving VA Chen Yi.
Not only is the Imperial Crown Prince brilliant, but he is also tactful, to say the least, according to VA Chen Yi's thoughts. He recalled the day when the news broke, causing a huge controversy regarding the credibility of the courtiers serving the imperial family. It even stirred up the higher echelons of government in both the House of Commons and Lords.
VA Chen Yi remembered that day vividly. The revelation highlighted how connected the imperial family is to the lives of common people. Not only did the public sympathize with the imperial family, but they also supported the death sentences passed down to the assailants. Despite the modernization of Butuanon's society, the monarchy remained a strong institution that could rally the people to protect and sympathize with them.
Their discussion regarding their daily lives and MG Luna's interactions with the imperial family continued for several more hours. Vice Admiral Chen Yi encountered members of the cadet branches of the imperial family, lightening the atmosphere for the two heads of the operation.
As their fleet approached Pratas Island, most people had already gone to sleep, trying to catch a brief nap before the operation commenced. However, two notable figures, Vice Admiral Chen Yi and Major General Antonio Luna, remained engaged in deep conversation. Now, their focus shifted to the impending operation, and they were joined by Brigadier General Yong Li, Brigadier General Guolao Jiānwén, and Brigadier General Mingde Zhu. Each of the three Brigadier Generals had their respective colonels accompanying them.
The group was actively discussing their plan of attack, with Major General Luna leading the conversation while the others listened attentively.
"A few hours from now, we will be arriving at the island of Taiwan, also known as Formosa in Japanese. Our destination includes various coastal towns across the island. Brigadier General Mingde Zhu, you and your brigade of 10 thousand soldiers will be securing the land around the coastal capital of Tainan-Ken (Tainan), located in the southern part of the island. It is crucial for you and your men to take control of its coastal cities and the surrounding towns, as these areas hold significant economic importance for the island.
Upon securing the entire capital of Tainan, your next objective is to gain control of the villages and towns within the Tainan-Ken region. According to information from a merchant, the population density in the surrounding areas is much lower than in the capital, making it a relatively easier task.
Although the likelihood of a naval battle on this front is lower due to the possibility that most of their ships are stationed in Taihoku City, we should be prepared. In the event of a naval engagement on this side, we anticipate minimal losses since the Imperial Navy of the Japanese Empire has a significantly lower number of ships compared to ours. Do you comprehend?"
With a smile, MG Luna confidently delivered these instructions as he placed a small black stone at the shore of Tainan-Ken, symbolizing Brigadier General Mingde Zhu and his troops.
Brigadier General Mingde Zhu and his colonels nodded in understanding as they studied the map. Each had their own thoughts, but a common undercurrent of nervousness pervaded. This shared sentiment was one familiar to soldiers anticipating engagement in battle.
"Brigadier General Yong Li, and your entire brigade of 8 thousand soldiers, will be securing the township of Gosei, Taichū-Ken. Your mission mirrors that of Brigadier General Mingde Zhu: capture the entire Taichū-Ken, focusing on government structures and neutralizing military officers stationed in each Taichū-Ken.
While Gosei Township may not serve as the capital of Taichū-Ken, it holds pivotal importance as the largest and only coastal township in the prefecture. Its strategic capture will provide a significant advantage for our forces.
Similar to Tainan-Ken, Taichū-Ken is of great economic and cultural significance to the island. Gaining control of these prefectures (Ken) before the main invading forces arrive will substantially aid our comrades." Major General Antonio Luna continued, placing a white stone on Taichū-Ken's coast. Brigadier General Yong Li and his colonels listened attentively, ensuring they didn't miss any vital information about the impending invasion.
"I, along with Brigadier General Guolao Jiānwén and the forces of Vice Admiral Chen Yi, will be taking control of the northern part of the island. The capital, Taihoku-Ken, is where the majority of our campaign will be focused, as it is also the residence of Governor-General Nogi Maresuke of the Imperial Japanese Army. It is our responsibility to capture this portion of the island, or at the very least, hold it while awaiting the arrival of our main invading forces.
Gaining control of this part of the island will not only benefit us but will also ensure our success in this campaign. However, we anticipate encountering significantly greater resistance in this area, given that it may house the majority of the enemy's ships." MG Antonio Luna explained, placing a miniature ship and two black stones on the coast of Taihoku City. This gesture prompted nods of agreement from the assembled officers. However, one of Brigadier General Mingde Zhu's colonels had questions that were acknowledged by MG Luna himself.
"I would like to ask whether we still need to head towards the capital once we have secured our assigned areas," inquired Brigadier General Mingde Zhu's colonel, prompting MG Luna to squint his eyes.
"No. Your mission is to secure and take total control of the areas you are assigned to. Do not be deceived into thinking that you can achieve complete control at a faster rate. The island's people desire independence, and the moment you and your men leave your area, they will likely stage an uprising. This won't just be troublesome for you and your men; it will also impact the other areas.
This is why we must suppress these areas at all costs, either through force or goodwill," MG Luna replied, causing Brigadier General Mingde Zhu's colonel to realize his mistake in questioning. The poor man also received a displeased glare from Brigadier General Mingde Zhu himself, clearly unsatisfied with his soldier's question.
"Anyway, some of my soldiers will assist you in reclaiming the assigned areas. This will bolster the existing forces you command," Vice Admiral Chen Yi declared, dispelling the awkward atmosphere created by Brigadier General Zhu's colonel's questioning. "This war isn't solely ours; it's for our people. Recall our soldiers' creed: 'Honor and glory for the Empire and the Imperial Family.' This battle is dedicated to the people of the empire and to our comrades who fell fighting the Japanese in pursuit of their mission."
Vice Admiral Chen Yi continued, rallying and reminding everyone of their creed. His words not only infused the room with enthusiasm and hope but also stirred pride and excitement—a stark contrast to the prevailing sentiments during the ongoing meeting.
The meeting persisted until they reached a location a few kilometers off the coast of Tainan, where they commenced preparations. Soldiers armed themselves with the necessary weaponry, explosives, and gayang. Simultaneously, artillery and other weapons, including the boats for the island landing, were readied.
(a/n: Gayang in this story is a common weapon of the Butuanon people of the empire, which were then adopted by the military as swords for the soldiers. It is a double-edged sword about 24–48 in (61–122 cm) in length with a typical hook hilt grip to prevent slipping.)
Now, with half of the entire fleet under Vice Admiral Chen Yi and half of Major General Luna's men, the force approaches the island of Taiwan. People start to feel a mix of nervousness and excitement. Nervous because, for the majority of them, this will be their first battle, yet excited as they anticipate that this conflict will bring them honor and fame.
Meanwhile, on the island of Taiwan (Formosa), most of its residents are already asleep, especially in the coastal cities where people are tired from a full day of work. In the coast of Tainan-Ken's capital, Tainan, all houses are now in darkness. Buildings are the sole providers of light on the streets, illuminated by the lamps and lanterns used by patrolling police to light their way.
Unaware of their responsibilities and fueled by years of peace in the village, Governor-General Nogi Maresuke of Formosa made the decision to reduce the number of stationed soldiers in the prefecture (Ken) of Tainan. Only four thousand were left, deemed sufficient to maintain peace in the area. Despite a recent incident, Governor-General Nogi Maresuke adamantly refused to bolster the number of soldiers and police in the region. He even relocated naval ships stationed there back to Taihoku City.
Consequently, the entire fleet under Vice Admiral Chen Yi was deployed to support the entire brigade led by Brigadier General Mingde Zhu, consisting of ten thousand soldiers and fifty navy personnel. The insufficient military presence in the area proved to be a significant oversight on the Japanese side, resulting in a grave error.
