"No one's asked me to salute yet."

She offered a small smile. "I suspect no one knows quite what to do with you." Of all the soldiers I'd met, she seemed the most disciplined—standing tall, her short hair brushed back, her dark, narrow eyes focused. She was also the only one carrying a sword.

"What's happening, Kasrin?" Fael asked.

"Maneuvers this afternoon, and we're likely moving out tomorrow."

Fael nodded, avoiding any triumphant glances at Speransky, who responded with another ambiguous snort.

"Move where?" I inquired.

Kasrin shot me a quick look, replying sharply, "You'll find out when we get there, Dravos."

"Sorry," I said.

"Put away your gear."

"Right away," I agreed, ducking into the tent, careful not to knock Opal from my shoulder. Inside, it was cooler. Four cots were arranged, three with identical backpacks beneath them; I placed my satchel under the fourth.
