Mayeux himself is a very opportunistic and selfish person. But he also has a conscience and he also has feelings and hearts

Aeryon convinces him. Convinces him that he, a person who could be very selfish, would sacrifice his life for him

This shows how great the Kan charisma that he could even convinces someone like him to die for him. 

But, even though the Kan never hides thing from him, there are some things that the Kan did not say but he could deduce it. 

The Kan did not say it but Mayeux is confident that the Kan ambition probably would not end with just uniting the Great Steppe. 

This could be seen on how much care he gave to the Yan and the Western Zhou. 

One of the reasons why his Kan wanted to go to the west is also because the Western Zhou. 

There was another alternative method to strengthen the tribe and then unify the Steppe. 

It is something that he had once debated with his lord.
