Am I the Magi King?! Part 1

"Dear, please refrain from asking our son such questions at the dinner table." Helen said, her eyes set upon her husband with a piercing gaze full of unbridled rage, hidden behind her normal sweet smile.

"I was just curious." Frank said.

The rest of the dinner went by quietly. Dax did not really want to discuss anything as he was still trying to come to terms with the events of the day and Frank did not want to risk setting off his wife. Helen just enjoyed the peace while having her two most important people eat with her.

After Dinner Dax took a shower then went to bed. As he entered his room to sleep his mother called up from the kitchen. "Remember you have an appointment in the morning. Try to get some sleep tonight." She said.

Sleep is all he had on his mind. After the constant nightmares keeping him awake at night, the stress of being in F class, and the monster hunting he had done earlier he could think of no better joy than climbing into bed.

Dax got into bed, pulled his covers up and went to sleep within minutes. He slept a deep and dreamless sleep. As the sun peered through his window and he could feel the warmth of the light, he could not help but notice a weight on his chest. He was finding it difficult to breathe.

He opened his eyes to see a strange creature looking down at him. It was around two feet tall while sitting on its backside, covered in black scales, two arms, two legs, and bat-like wings upon its back. It had eyes like a serpent and tiny horns atop its head like a goat.

As it saw Dax open his eyes it noticed and started wagging its tail as if it was happy.

"Good morning!" It spoke in a tiny voice.

Dax's eyes widened as he thought it might be a dream, a really vivid heavy dream, but a dream.

His first impulse was to yell, there was a talking monster on his chest after all. However, he knew if he yelled, and it turned out to be just a dream then his mother would just worry more about him. So, he took a deep breath, or least as deeply as he could with the weight of the creature pressing down on his lungs. Calmer, he decided to respond. If he was asleep the worst thing he would do is talk in his sleep.

"Hello?" Dax asked.

"So happy that you have returned to us Magi King!" The little creature exclaimed.

"Wait… What?" Dax asked.

"You can't deny it!" The little creature replied. "I felt your power yesterday and flew as fast as my little wings could take me! To think the one blessed with mana would return in my lifetime! This is so exciting."

"Could you get off?" Dax asked, the creature was moving around in its joy, and it was starting to cause him pain.

"Oh, sorry!" The little creature said as he hopped onto the bed next to Dax.

Dax sighed, since the weight and pain disappeared with the movement of the creature that meant that he was wide awake and whatever this was, was really happening. "So, what are you and why did you call me the Magi King?" Dax asked.

"I am a dragon!" The little one said. "Well, more of a whelp, but one day I shall be a mighty dragon! And I called you the Magi King because you are… You are the Magi King, aren't you?!"

"A dragon?" Dax asked. "What kind of monster is that?"

"Dragons are not monsters!" The whelp said. "We are mystic creatures blessed with and born from the mana of the world! Nothing like those monsters! The Magi King should know that!"

"Listen, I don't know anything about being the Magi King." Dax said. "I am just Dax."

"So, you have not awakened to your memories." The whelp said. It then pulled up Dax's necklace with its little hand. "This is proof you are the Magi King though."

"You know about the orb?!" Dax asked.

"Of course, it was forged by the dragons eons ago for the Magi King." The whelp explained. "It is a symbol of our friendship and a powerful tool in the hands of a powerful mage."

"It was passed down from generation to generation in my family." Dax explained. "My possessing it does not mean I am the Magi King."

"I guess." The whelp said. "Are you sure you are not the Magi King?"

"Not really if I am honest." Dax said. "A lot of weird stuff keeps happening and it is getting harder to discount them all as just coincidences. Do you know the Magi King personally? Like were you alive when he was?"

"No, I am still young." The whelp said. "I have just turned ninety. I only know of it from reading our ancient library… where I hatched… alone… but if you are the Magi King then I won't be alone! Because the Magi King is the friend to dragons!"

"Wait, alone?" Dax asked. "Are you saying you are the only dragon? What happened to your race?"

"Dragons are born of the mana." The whelp said. "The world is low on mana. It seems humans no longer believe in the mana and the other races that once lived are no longer there. Without belief the mana dries up and dies. Without the mana, there can be no more dragons… But now that the Magi King has returned the mana shall return as well!"

"Dax honey!" Helen yelled. "It is time to get up! Your appointment is soon!"

"Shit!" Dax said to himself.

"What is wrong Magi King Dax?" The whelp asked.

"I think it might be a little hard to explain the presence of a dragon in my room." Dax said.

His door handle began to turn, and the door slowly opened. Frank popped his head in. "Good, you are up! Now get dressed and don't keep your mother waiting!" He said, then he closed the door.

Dax sat in disbelief that his father didn't mention anything about the tiny creature next to him.

"Oh, only beings with mana can see me." The whelp said. "That is why I know you are the Magi King! You just have to be!"
