The first thing that went wrong with their plan was, the maid who left to see if the duke was coming out of the office was dragged away by Mary who needed help scrubbing the curtains.

The maid in the hallway had no idea about her getting dragged away. So, when she saw the duke walking to the hallway, she started trembling as she knew things weren't looking too good for them.

She couldn't just run to tell her friends. It would be obvious she was plotting something if the duke were to see her that way. Alas, there wasn't enough time to do anything.

So yeah, the duke walked past her, then stood in front of his bedroom, where things had gone wrong again.
