Nightmares

Screaming. Screaming was the only thing that could be heard as blood splattered against the faces of dead children and horrified wives and mothers. There were men who tried to protect their loved ones without resorting to violence.

"What have we done?!"

"Why are you doing this?!"

They'd ask, tears streaming down their faces. A man with dark purple hair would only smirk, his face barely visible.

"What have you done? You were created." He'd say before slashing at a man who now wore the face of my father, cutting his throat open.

I woke up in a cold sweat, breathing heavily. I immediately picked up the sword that I kept under my pillow, holding it tightly to my chest. I've been having the same nightmare every night since the tragedy. It's been a year since then. I took a deep breath as I began to slowly calm down. I gently caressed the sword as I allowed my eyes to close for a moment. This sword was the last thing that I received from my father before he was killed.

I continued to sit there for a moment before I pulled myself out of bed, setting my sword to the side. Waking up in it's self was such an painful experience but...I couldn't allow the lost of my people's lives to be in vain no matter now much I wanted to end it all.

"Lena! Come down stairs! Mistress wants you!" Someone called out, snapping me out of my thoughts. I sighed a bit. 'That's right...not all humans are bad' I thought before deciding to respond.

"I'll be down in a bit Oliver!" I called out as I walked over to a mirror. I stared at myself for a moment. I had long light brown hair with ginger tips, and bright green eyes. There were also horns extruding from the top of my head along with fluffy looking deer ears where 'human' ears would be normally. I closed my eyes and took a deep breath. When I opened them again the features were no where to be found. Having no clean clothes, I didn't bother changing and simply pulled on a hoodie, making my way out of my room. My skin was as pale as could be. Mistress wasn't exactly the nicest person to me or Oliver but...she still gave me what I needed to survive, like food, money, and a roof over my head for example. I knew better than anyone that she only took us in so that she wouldn't have to get her hands dirty but as long as I got something out of it, I couldn't care less. I stretched as I made my way downstairs, preparing for any abuse that the woman had prepared for me.

"Ah, look who decided to show up~" The mistress said after seeing me finally come down. My eyes narrowed as I saw the woman's hand tightly grip Oliver's hair.

"Aren't you quite the impatient one." I hissed out , glaring at her as she released my friend.

"Relax Lena, he's fine." She laughed as she wiped her hands off on the front of her skirt. Her hair was raven colored and was cut into a bob. She dressed as a nobel despite being a middle class citizen and for a small woman, she had quite the strength. I glanced over at Oliver, seeing as his head hung in embarrassment.

"...What was I summoned for mistress?" I asked her, glancing over at Oliver. Though I didn't say anything, he seemed to understand what I wanted and came to my side, standing behind me with his eyes glued to the floor. Though he was taller than me, he was lanky and timid. He had messy white hair, milk chocolate like skin, and pale grey eyes that immediately told any one who looked at them that he was blind. It was strange. Though he couldn't see anything, he navigated and did daily activities without any apparent struggles. Someone who didn't know would think that he had 20/20 vision. He was even somehow able to sense what I wanted without looking at my facial features. Sometimes I was pretty convinced that he was the one with the magical ability instead of me. At times like this though, he seemed like nothing more then a scared puppy.

"I need you to go pick up my morning elixirs from the merchant on the corner. Be quick, and take your mutt with you." She said, using her hand to shoo us away. I huffed and grabbed Oliver's wrist.

"Let's go." I mumbled as I pulled him with me. He simply followed quietly. I met Oliver a few days after my village was destroyed. We both saved each other. He saved me from completely bleeding out, and I saved him from starvation. Afterwards, I made a deal with mistress so that Oliver and I wouldn't have to live in the slums. He didn't like the way she treated him though. That's why she was going to pack her things and run away with Oliver when she had the opportunity.

"I...I'm sorry Lena..." Oliver whispered out quietly. I stopped in my tracks, glancing back at him.

"Why are you apologizing? None of this is your fault. Don't worry though. I'm going to get us out of here." I whispered out to him with a small smile.

"Lena I-....Thank you for this...for everything.." He said, returning the smile.

"Of course! Don't forget, you saved me first. You are like family to me. The brother I never had."

Oliver's smile fell for a moment but it quickly returned.

"Its the same way for me..." He mumbled. I hummed at this, letting go of his wrist and holding his hand instead, giving it a light squeeze.

"Now let's go get these elixirs! Maybe we can grab some candy as well." I said with a light laugh as I moved to pull him along again. Something felt a bit off but I wasn't sure. It was a strange feeling. A feeling that made my entire body shudder. I ignored the feeling as I ventured into the town.

'I'm sure its nothing...'
