Chapter 30

"Why are you guys here?" I asked with a raised eyebrow as I looked down at captain wheels, who had brought several members of the X-Men with him.

"I have heard of your new little… mission." The crippled telepath said as he locked his hands together with his elbows on his knees. "I would like you to take the X-Men with you."

"Bad idea." Betty said before I could say anything, pretty much stealing the words right out of my mouth. "This ain't some sort of school trip Xavier, we are going to be tracking one of the strongest and most dangerous beings on the planet."

"What makes you guys good enough to go then?" Bobby asked, though rather than judgmental the ice manipulating mutant genuinely looked curious.

"Damian and I are both strong enough to actually take hits." Betty started explaining. "Valeria is one of the smartest people on the planet and Laura's healing factor means that she can actually get up after getting hit. The rest of you would be lucky if you don't just become a red smear on the ground after one hit." Harsh, but not untrue. While definitely a powerful team, this lineup of X-Men definitely were on the squishier side compared to some of their comic counterparts. Especially Rouge, who was only a power absorber at the moment instead of Captain Marvel level brute she was in the comics, and Jean who still seemed to be have her Phoenix powers locked.

"I can phase through hits though." Kitty said with her hand raised high.

"And I think I might be able to reassemble myself if my ice form gets shattered." Followed by Bobby, who also had his hand raised high.

"And neither of you can hit back, which makes you the equivalent of a particularly loud mosquito. Factors that will only make him angry and trust me, you wouldn't like him when he's angry." She said with a glare, her yellow eyes glowing eerily. "So no, this mission is not going to be a school trip."

"…I understand." Xavier finally admitted with a sigh, which seemed to make the younger X-Men look dejected except for Rouge who seemed to understand how dangerous what we were doing was. "But I would like for Storm to accompany you."

"That… is acceptable." Betty said with a sigh before turning back to the Blackbird and heading inside the jet.

"Mister Owen, can I have a moment of your time before you leave?" And then I was asked that by Xavier. There was a part of me that wanted to be a little shit but I kinda had been doing that a lot lately.

"Sure." So I simply floated down to the telepath's level with a shrug. "What's the problem?"

"I just wanted to make sure that you are aware of the danger you are about to be in, undertaking a mission like this."

"Didn't you just try to send the whole X-Men to the same mission?" I asked with a raised eyebrow, hypocritical much?

"Yes but I have been with my X-Men from the moment they started their training, I know that they can handle most odds. With you on the other hand…" He took a moment to think and then sighed. "I will not lie mister Owen, your status as a student of this institution is almost pointless. You have a greater control over your gifts, which are extraordinary by themselves, compared to any of our other students. From the moment you stepped foot into my school, and likely even before, you jumped from one adventure to another with the kind of disregard to your safety only a youth could have." Ouch, not entirely wrong but still. Ouch.

"It might sound illogical to you with the amount of power you possess, but I can't help but think that I should have done in order to help you compared to pretty much nothing I have done." Ahh, now that made sense.

Xavier had been training the X-Men for a long time, so even if one of them got hurt on a mission he could chalk it up to it being unavoidable, just sad. But if something happened to me on a mission, he would start to wonder if it had happened because he hadn't trained me like he did the others since I arrived.

He was right, it was illogical. Understandable, but illogical.

"I might not be a teacher but I would say that every student needs something different." I said after a moment, trying to be nice to the master telepath for once. "I don't think you need to worry, we won't be taking any unnecessary risks if we can help it." I said with a shrug before smirking. "I'm not exactly such a goodie two shoes that I would risk my life for nothing."

"Then I can only hope that you will find things worth risking your life, mister Owen." The telepath said with a smile and turned his chair back.

Heh, it was almost unbelievable after the disastrous first meeting we had but, I thought that I was starting warm up to the professor. And it didn't even bad to do anything with his whole 'trust me' telepathic aura he had around him. Weird… but not entirely unwelcome.

"Are you done with your little back and forth?" And then I was suddenly being pulled towards the Blackbird. "Cause we already wasted enough time." Betty said with a scowl as we entered the jet and passed Storm.

"Yeah yeah, whatever. Do you even have any idea where our not very jolly green giant is?" I did not whine. Merely made an observation.

"I have a few possible locations, starting with a certain forest in British Columbia."
