Chapter 33 The Prison

The prison was in full view of the group, the strong fences that surrounded the entire prison and the sturdy concrete walls that looked unshakable. There was only 1 big problem, the prison was infested with walkers.

Walkers were in the yard, and they could see walkers in the outside recreational area. The yard and this area were connected by a gate. The gate was currently open, and the walkers would be able to freely travel between the yard and the recreational area.

There were two fences that surrounded the prison and in between them was a walkway. There were tall towers spread around the prison, they were in this walkway and would be a great way to take out the walkers from a distance.

Opening the first gate situated at the front of the prison, the group went into this area. John then said, "I have a plan. The rest of the group will spread out and climb the towers. You will then cover me as I run to the gate that separates the yard and the recreational area. Then we will kill all the walkers in the yard and sleep there for the night, and then clear out the rest of the prison tomorrow".

With the plan now set and the group spreading out to the different towers, John got ready to run towards the gate. Carl was standing near the second gate that led into the yard, when John nodded at him, Carl opened the gate.

John ran through the gate and started running towards the gate leading to the recreational area. John pulled his knife and swung at any walkers that got close to him. Each swing slicing through heads, at least 10 walkers met their doom as John made his way to the gate.

When he arrived at the gate John pulled it closed, before he secured it. Then he went into the tower that was right next to the gate. Killing a walker that lunged at him when he entered the tower, John climbed the stairs to the top of the tower.

The interior of the tower was like a little office, there was a desk and a chair and that was it. The windows of the tower took up half the walls around him, giving a great view of the area. John then walked over to the desk and saw a bolt action sniper rifle. Taking it, John walked out of the tower onto the platform that surrounded.

He aimed the rifle at a walker and shot. Hitting a walker in the head. Then he pulled back the bolt handle, the bullet casing falling to the platform. John then aimed at another and repeated several times until the sniper was out of ammo. By the time John had used all the ammo in his new sniper, the rest of the group had just finished the last walker still in the yard.

With the yard now cleared of any living walkers, the group came out of the towers and regrouped at the prison entrance. The group members all had smiles spread across their faces, as they looked over the area they had just cleared. They were excited that they wouldn't be traveling anymore, or at least not for a while.

With the yard now clear, the group moved the cars into the yard and then closed the gate. The group then began to move the bodies of the walkers to a remote corner of the prison yard and then burned them all.

When the walkers had all been burned, the group then began to set up a campfire. With the campfire set, the group surrounded the fire and began to eat some food they had left from their trip. They were running a little low in both the food and the ammo department, but it wouldn't be a serious problem until a week later.

As they sat around the fire eating, John held Sarah and fed her, she was pouting because she could do it herself, but John didn't listen to her. She kept saying, "I'm a big girl". The whole group was amused by her behavior and started to tease her; her pouting face was just too cute. The group simply could not resist.

As the group was conversing about different plans for the prison Hershel started talking about building a big garden so they could grow their own food and not have to rely solely on scavenging. This plan would have to wait however as winter was just around the corner. Rick said, "This place is perfect. Strong defenses and away from any major cities. There should also be a log of the armory inside the warden's office, plus the prison has a medical center and a cafeteria. The cafeteria would also have a commissary, meaning some extra food, especially junk food".

Hearing this the group was even more excited, T-dog said, "I hope I can find a snickers bar in there". Amy's eyes were practically shining at the thought of a chocolate bar. The rest of the group then exclaimed about different types of candies. They had even started arguing about which candy was the best.

Even John was happy, knowing he didn't have to worry about Amy, Maggie, and Sarah as much as they would be safe here while he traveled around the world, killing walkers and saving people, all while killing any evil groups he comes across.

The group talked with each other for quite a while, sounding like one big family. Beth and Maggie had started singing and sang a lovely song, their voices complimented each other very well. They then decided to rest for the night, John settled his family into a spot near the fire. Maggie, Amy, and Sarah, all lay down together while John would check the perimeter and keep watch for the night. He stayed with them until they fell asleep before he got up and walked the perimeter.

John thought about all the changes that had happened since he came to this world. Glen was now in a relationship with Beth, and they seemed happy. Daryl and Carol had started to get involved with each other. Dale and Hershel had become great friends. Merle had become more involved in the group, and started to enjoy being with them, he had also been trying to stop being racist. The kids he had saved at the mall were now a part of this group and would help whenever they could.

Rob, Molly, Riley, and Lily had all found things they liked to do, Rob would follow Daryl around copying him, much to Daryl's displeasure. But sometimes John would catch him with a smile on his face as he taught Rob something new. Molly liked to cook so she had been learning and was improving very quickly, while Riley was more of a tomboy and liked to kill walkers and loot different houses a lot. Sarah had also come to find her place in the group, she liked plants and was learning about them from Hershel while also learning about medicine.

As John walked around the fence, he noticed that the fence was solid and there weren't any holes or anything that could compromise its integrity, although the poles holding the fence were not the strongest. They would certainly bend if enough force was applied, John decided to remember this for when he started to further increase the prisons defenses.

As John came to the gate that led into the recreational area, he saw that some walkers had lined up along the fence. They were pushing up against the fence and groaning. John seeing that they had lined up for him, pulled his knife out and walked along the fence as he stabbed each walker in the head. Killing 6 walkers, John then walked over to his family and sat there looking at their peaceful expressions.
