“I was probably happier than you were when you got the college scholarship. The Michaels and I figured we could tell you everything after you graduated and then you would have a good income and could pay the lawyers to fight them for your house and the money they owed you. But then came Kitty and you were sucked right back into the hole.”
“At least they didn’t go after Kitty with the broom.”
Zach’s eyes narrowed at Bobby’s statement.
“How did you know that?” Jason asked in horror.
“I saw the evidence and watched her do it once. I ran back home to my parents. You were about eleven. I told them and they talked to Ann and Evan and threatened them with Social Services, they didn’t hit you after that,” Bobby said in a flat tone of voice. “Instead of beating you, they used you as their personal slave. I know you did the major share of the cooking from the time you were eleven. They didn’t even cook you a holiday dinner. You came to eat with us.”
