Chapter 36

Gabe didn’t look back, barely took a breath until they’d gotten out of the station and were most of the way back to Tom’s condo.

“Right, well, that was awful. Let’s not do that again ever,” Tom said as he unlocked the door, and he did sound like he was full of adrenaline and nervous energy, even more than usual. “Hey. We’ll work it out of our systems, yeah?”

“Which part are we not doing again, Tommy? The part where a bunch of God-fearing, good people get shot up because I couldn’t get the damn paperwork in place fast enough?” Gabe scrubbed both hands over his face, then yanked on his hair. “Or the part where I let a kid get shot at because I was too scared to move?” At least that kid hadn’t died. Gabe had no fucking clue what he’d have done if that boy had died in his arms. His imagination failed. Probably a good thing, given the fact that his throat ached and his eyes stung just thinking about it.
