“Can’t leave you.” He moved back and lit a cigarette. “Just like I can’t quit these.” He smiled and his face was serious once more. “I have this life, you see, this life I started once, and never finished.”
“You mean Paris?”
Davinder didn’t say anything.
“Why are you afraid to be loved? What scares you so? What is it that you’re hiding from?”
He looked at the cigarette in his fingers and sighed. “I don’t know.”
“You end us because of Eileen, I’ll take it. I’ll die a little, but I’ll take it. But if you end thisbecause you’re afraid of happiness…I’ll never forgive you for it.”
“It’s gonna get ugly, Allan. You know that, right?” He shook all over and crossed his arms over his chest. “She’s gonna tear me to pieces. This will be the nastiest divorce in the history of the fuckingworld.”
“But I’ll be there. I’ll be right by you through it all.”
And what would happen to Elsie in all this?
I couldn’t think about that.
