Complicated Heart

[Johan's POV]

"Johan? Johan, are you there?"

Thumb and index finger twiddling with his lips, Johan jolted out of his trance at Jerome's voice. "Y-Yeah?"

"I said, do you have everything ready? You sure you haven't forgotten anything?"

Johan nodded and heaved his bag onto his back. He turned to the man who gave him a place to stay, rocked on his heels, then spread his arms for a hug. "Well, thanks? For everything and stuff. I know we've only been together for a few days, but I owe you a lot already."

Jerome smiled and welcomed the embrace, patting his head. "You're welcome to come back anytime. We can find your mom together like I promised. You know I never backed out from my promise, right?"

"Hmm. I know." Johan relished this innocent warmth, squeezing Jerome in a bone-crushing hug. "Thanks again, Rome. For finding me. For being a good friend." He shook his head. "No, for being the best friend I can ask for."
