Roots

They were back on the road, destination not yet know. They were out of Umbrella's hairs, for now. But was impossible to tell how close behind they were. How could they even try to hide from such a powerful organization? Eventually they made it back to land, relieved to see the car in sight, untouched. They had the safety blanket of transportation but no where to run. They sped off into the distance, silent for hours. How could she even begin to apologize to him for that. For everything.

The silence became too much, she had to say something.

"You can just drop me off somewhere-"

"How many damn times do we need to go over this? I am not leaving you, not after all of this."

"This isn't your problem, it's mine."

"Well it's my problem now too, I'm your partner in crime now right? Taking down multi billion dollar corporations and kicking zombie ass-"

"I mean that's one way to see it.."

"So where are we heading to doll?"

"Yeah don't call me that.."

"Sorry, don't kill me."

"Ha, very funny... Are you really in this with me? For the long run? You do know what this means right..."

"Hey, I'm gonna die soon anyway if I'm out there on my own, speeding up the process won't hurt me."

"Alright then, we're going back to where it started-"

"Oh you are crazy-"

"I need to hunt down some old... friends.. I have a feeling they might have headed that way too.."

"Oh you have apocalypse friends besides me, I thought I was special"

"Never thought I would be willing to go back there.. "

She knew how much of a death trap this would be, she heard the rumors. The city was a wasteland, swarming with not only the undead, but mutant creatures Umbrella created in their labs. Something drew them all there, running rampage through the city like savage wolves. She felt herself growing stronger, fearing the same force was pulling her to Raccoon City as well. For all she knew it could be another trap. She needed to know everything she could find out. She needed to find Chris and Jill.

Shiloh was lucky to have Peter, just to have company by her side during all of this was more than enough. He really wasn't evaluating this the way she wished he would. His life was not worth losing over her. She could run and hide as long as she wanted to, but eventually she would be captured, and Peter would be killed. That was the only way this could end, she knew that from the beginning.

It was a long trip to Raccoon City, it seemed the closer they got the more of the undead they passed by. All heading in the same direction, the same direction they were driving right into.

Hours passed by, seeming like weeks. Speeding down the open highway, it was finally in sight - 1 MILE TO RACCOON CITY

Her stomach dropped, Peter looked her way offering a quick smile. She could feel her power growing, the rage burning inside of her. She could hear and feel each small noise, the roar of the engine, the growls of the undead, the rapid heartbeats of her and her friend. He was scared, scared of her, scared of what they were getting themselves into. This was a mistake.

She was never one for sappy comments, she hated to care about others, she was so familiarized with putting herself first. But for him, she would cut her own life short to protect him.

"Hey, can we pull over for a second?"

"Now? We're almost there-"

"Please."

"Alright, alright"

He pulled a sharp turn, pulling over to a small clearing on the highway. He looked around cautiously, knowing the longer they sat still the more of the infected they would attract.

"We need to talk-"

"Well come on spit it out.."

"I know you're scared, I'm scared too. I can't promise that everything will be okay, but I need to promise you something. I dragged you into this, I'm not worth it. I won't let anything happen to you, I would rather die than let that happen."

"Shiloh, that's pretty dark... We'll get through this."

"You will, I know that. At any point, if I tell you to leave you have to promise me you will."

"I can't do that, I'm not leaving you."

"Peter!- Please just this one fucking time, just promise me. "

"Fine.."

His answer was a lie, one she could read right through. It was better than nothing.

They pulled back onto the road, inching closer and closer to the forbidden zone. The place where it all started, she was responsible for everything. It started to hit her hard, her body trembling with regret. What if Umbrella really was able to contain it? If she never made that decision maybe this would have never happened. The growls of millions of the undead filled the air, rotten stench of blood and flesh breaking through the cars protection. Peter didn't seem to notice, it was probably just the guilt eating at her. There was only one building still intact. A large silver shining building, The Hive. That was what they were so drawn to.

Eventually she would make her way inside, a final match to the death to risk it all. Now was not the time, she pointed, guiding Peter to take a sharp turn before entering the city. Racing up the winding roads of the Arklay Mountain. Pulling up to the front entrance of the manor sent chills down her spine. There was another vehicle outside, it was impossible to tell how long it had been sitting there. She hoped they were alone. They both exited the vehicle hurrying inside. Blood and guts stained the once pristine walls, corpses scattered about. Even with the explosion so nearby, it was all still intact, just another indicator of how important this place was to them.

Peter, already starting with his pestering questions, she completely ignored each one. She led him down into the labs, searching to find the files. She needed the validation, she needed to learn more. Peter must of thought she was losing her mind, muttering under her breath with each step. After an hour she finally found it, the only well lit room down beneath the mansion. Shiloh rushed into the room, knocking over medical equipment and files onto the floor, searching for the right ones. Grabbing them quickly, she held the folders against her chest, a look of victory staining her face.

"Guessing you found something?"

"These... It's all here.. Who I am... Who they made me.."

"But you already know..."

"I need to know how to control it, what I'm capable of. "

They both collapsed onto the floor, Shiloh hesitantly handing over half the stack to Peter. He already knew she was a monster, learning more couldn't hurt at this point. They both skimmed through each paragraph. She burned each word into her brain, every chemical used, every test, every monster they made her face. Her abilities were fueled by her emotions. Anger was the most dangerous, bringing out the worst of her power. The files both terrified and intrigued her. How had she forgotten this all happened? As if her mind was trying to protect her from it. She had hurt so many, pets, her mother, even herself once. Terrible tantrums she couldn't learn how to control. She needed to learn now.

Lost in the files, Peter grabbed her arm tightly, pressing a finger to his lips. Footsteps approached from the distance, heavy boots pounding against the floor with each step. The vibrations rang through her ears, one set, only one. She could handle one target. Jumping up from her seat, she cocked her gun towards the doorway, Peter close behind with his own. A familiar face peeked in, a voice she would never forget. One she was genuinely happy to hear.

"I'm glad I found you."
