It was only a few minutes later when Gym Leader Norman and his wife, the Gym Administrator Caroline, entered the arena. Caroline immediately walked over to the announcer's podium where she started following the League's handbook on the start of a gym challenge.
"Gym Leader Norman, please send out your first pokemon."
Norman stood there with his arms crossed as he stared at me for a few seconds before he swiftly and with a very practiced motion grabbed a specific ball from his belt and threw it out while saying in a voice so quiet I almost couldn't hear him, "Slaking, you're up."
There was a brief flash of light and then a rather large Slaking was there laying on the ground picking its nose, the perfect image of laziness.
Caroline then continued, "Challenger Isaac, please send out your first pokemon."
I nodded and simply said, "Sucellus, it's your turn."
Without me even needing to throw his ball he came out and stood at the ready.
"Challenger Isaac, as the challenger you may start the battle when you're ready."
I immediately said, "Do it, Sucellus. This is a test to see what you need to work on. I'll only help if I see something I think you missed."
With only the briefest of nods Sucellus immediately started his normal combo of Grassy Terrain and Sunny Day. The only difference now that he evolved from before is that it seemed to be completely effortless for him to create the terrain, as if some lock that stopped him from truly grasping the skill had been removed. Rather than his previous guerilla tactics Sucellus used the speed he gained from the Sunny Day to get in close to Slaking and before the pokemon could even move Sucellus hit him with Foul Play. Sucellus followed up his attack by slashing his hand down Slaking's body, the power of both attacks sending Slaking back a few meters where he lay unconscious.
Norman glared at Sucellus as he returned Slaking to his ball. Turning his glare to me he said, "Your Shiftry is strong, but don't think this will be easy."
"Challenger Isaac has knocked out Gym Leader Norman's Slaking with ease. Gym Leader Norman please send out your next pokemon."
Following the same motions as before Norman sent out a Vigoroth. This time however, Norman said, "Vigoroth, your opponent is strong and fast. You can't get hit."
What happened next was an astounding dance where Vigoroth would constantly jump around dodging Sucellus and Sucellus would parry his attacks or dodge them. I could tell that Sucellus was enjoying the fight, he had a smirk on his face as he fought Vigoroth. I could also tell that Sucellus was much, much faster than Vigoroth and was holding himself back using the fight to gain more experience and hone himself. Seeing the benefits Sucellus was getting from this, I let it go on for a good 10 minutes before I called out, "Sucellus, that's enough. There is still one more pokemon for you to fight after. End it."
Immediately after that Sucellus created distance, and whined at me for ruining his fun. He quickly renewed the Grassy Terrain and Sunny Day then he moved. He moved so fast I couldn't keep track of him. One second he was near me, and the next he was in front of Norman on the opposite side of the field his one hand outstretched in front of him and Vigoroth crying in pain before fainting behind him.
After a brief moment of surprise Caroline announced in shock, "Gym Leader Norman's Vigoroth is unable to battle!"
"Would Gym Leader Norman please send out his final pokemon?"
Sucellus made his way back to me to reset for the fight, as per the rules. While he did that Norman took his time sending out his final pokemon. He was looking at Sucellus in complete shock.
This time Norman grabbed a ball from the opposite side of his belt and threw it out.
"Go, Pyroar!"
"And Gym Leader Norman has sent out his Pyroar! This is Norman's starter pokemon, a pokemon that hasn't been used in a Gym Battle defending his badge. Ever!"
I stared in shock at the sight of a pokemon native to Kalos. It was obvious that Pyroar was exceedingly strong, and very well taken care of.
Not wanting to be overheard I said just loud enough for Sucellus to hear me, "Suc, this is the strongest pokemon you've ever faced. No matter what, you can't get hit. There is no doubt in my mind that 1 hit is all it would need to knock you out or stop you from moving in order to knock you out with the next attack. Play it safe, keep your distance, and just pepper it with Bullet Seed."
With a nod and a shout Sucellus agreed and thus the fight began. It was astounding to watch as Sucellus didn't stop moving and just kept shooting Bullet Seed at Pyroar, he missed almost all of them because of the Pyroar's own attacks and movement, but the ones that hit certainly did some damage. For several minutes it looked like Sucellus would be able to eventually take Pyroar down, but then Norman shouted, "Pyroar, that's enough! Hyper Voice!"
I had no idea what that move did, I had never even heard of it before, so to be safe I yelled out, "Suc get back don't let it hit you!"
However, Sucellus couldn't get back fast enough and visible waves of sound echoed from Pyroar only to then smash into Sucellus throwing him backwards where he landed next to me unconscious.
It wasn't until Norman had walked up to me and placed his hand on my shoulder that I had realized I had been staring at Sucellus' unconscious body for several minutes. Jumping into action I returned Sucellus to his pokeball. I had completely missed Caroline's announcement of Norman winning the battle.
"Kid, you did good. Your shiftry is extremely strong. Keep training it and I'm sure it'll overtake Sidney's in no time. And here, you deserve this. If your shiftry wasn't so young it would have beaten Pyroar, who I'm not even supposed to use in a gym battle since he is my strongest pokemon." Norman said this while hold out his hand with the Balance Badge.
I shook my head and said, "No thanks, sir. I was only challenging you to see where my pokemon were at in strength, and how my strategies were working. While I lost the battle, I learned a lot. I also don't want Sucellus, my shiftry, to become arrogant so it's a good thing he lost. It's our first loss, and I feel like if I accept that badge it'll be something I come to regret in the future."
With that I said thank you to Caroline for her help and headed to the pokemon center.
Sorry it's been a while. School has kept me busy and I've been writing this slowly the entire time. Hopefully the next chapter will be out soon, I already have it planned out, but I still need to actually write it.
