Above him, through a gap in the canopy, the sky had gone from smoke-orange to an honest, colorless grey morning arriving on schedule, indifferent, the way mornings always were to whatever had happened the night before. Somewhere far off, a bird he did not recognize tried a few notes and abandoned them, as if even the local wildlife had decided this particular stretch of forest wasn't worth the effort of a full song yet.

Not because his body had nothing left though it didn't, not really, not in any sense that would have satisfied a physician but because moving was a decision, and every decision he made from this point forward was going to cost him something he could not yet calculate the price of. So he stayed beneath the fallen trunk, knees drawn up, palms split and stinging where the stream stones had opened them, and did the only productive thing left to a body this tired and a mind this awake.
