Apologies, but I've only been able to catch up to comments now. Another person must've liked your other comment since I've only read it a few moments ago.

The vow Sarah made is slightly different to the one they plan to make now. Sarah's vow is one person to another while the one Serena plans to make is a bit more complex. This one does have the same style with putting your life on the line to prove certain truths / declare something, but it also works a bit like a contract. Both sides can make an agreement with conditions for both parties. The priest acts as the witness to whole "contract agreement". Probably could've explained this better here.

I mean she does land up using the original host's memories instead, however at this moment she's just trying to get control of her mind.

On a frontline battlefield, you rarely get the option to choose between shooting or letting the person go. Serena couldn't risk letting the girl go because the girl could easily be faking it and shoot Serena when she has her guard down. Basically a dog-eat-dog world kind of situation.
