70's. there was a social reform. property and assets were confiscated from the well of, private businesses banned, high level education stopped, rich elders sent to countryside for 'reform' where they were basically meant to be mistreated (think of Stalin Russia re-education camps) and educated youth from cities sent to do rural work, where they would stay permanently if they married (household registration would be transferred over) or didn't get permission to relocate to the city. travel was monitored and required a recommendation from village leaders as well as a reason. jobs were either farming or working for the state in state factories, state stores, or law enforcement.
