While most combats end with one of the champions dead, the law dictates that a trial by combat ends when a champion dies or begs for mercy (surrenders). Therefore, not all trials by combat are to the death, although they often end that way because the champions lose control in battle and instead seek to kill their opponent, as that is easier than leaving them alive and pleading for mercy.
