you said it , his liking of the story wasn't enough to displace the exhaustion from work, it could be that he didn't like the story that much or his exhaustion was high. entirely possible and relatable.

lazy writing, it shouldn't be a relief at all, it's like forcing someone into a fist fight he is not a part of with a machine gun, the machine gun would not cancel out the baseline which was sleeping in his room or something. I know there is the investment Factor, maybe the system would give him something he didn't have before, but I think for instance, this should not be considered by the MC due to the intensity of the moment and the ambiguity of the system itself.
