Maybe it does not work with anything magical. It probably is one of the plot holes in the original books that the author can just interpretend however the author wants to.

No, I think the author meint that the hair is really black like just black. Normalerweise the hair color black doesn't exist and ehat we call black is just a really dark brown. That is why when you dye your hair black it seems way darker and people automaticaöy know you dyed your hair.
