Iron man CAN be arrogant not just because he's rich and smart but also because his father had a history with the military especially a major player on WW2 while Edward's family connection is a Spy mother from who knows where. They could literally frame ED as a terrorist pointing out evidence of his mother and this invention as well as those high-tech gadgets he's making at his basement. Once imprisoned they could do whatever they wanted to Ed and as a safety precaution for his AI since ROBIN can drag them down as well they can threaten that they would kill Edward if it happens and AI's basic protocol is to keep her Master safe.
