That man is simply insane. The hatred he has is for himself. The more he hates himself the more he will hurt those he chooses to "torture" more cruelly. Especially if those people are left standing in the end. His girls suffered at his hands, then he chose Riftan to take his place and sent him to die. But when it turned out he remained standing too, the great duke turned his hatred towards him.
Is he so blinded by his hatred for Riftan?
